Mass anti-government protest planned for next week

Several political parties, trade unions, student movements, and civil organizations have planned to hold a protest in Colombo on Wednesday, 2nd November.

The main opposition party, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), the Frontline Socialist Party (FSP), the Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU), the Inter-University Students Federation (IUSF), and the Young Journalists Association of Sri Lanka (YJASL) are expected to participate. 

Representatives of the groups signed a joint statement against the alleged suppression by the government, in Colombo yesterday (25).

SJB MP Mujibur Rahuman, Samagi Vanitha Balawegaya (SVB) National Organiser Hirunika Premachandra, SLFP Propaganda Secretary Thisara Gunasinghe, FSP Education Secretary Pubudu Jayagoda, Duminda Nagamuwa of the FSP, CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin, IUSF Acting Convenor Terrance Rodrigo, civil activist Dhanizh Ali, and YJASL Secretary M.F.M. Fazeer were among those who signed the joint statement.

According to the representatives of the various groups and political parties, the mass protest next week is being organized as “the first step in ousting President Ranil Wickremesinghe and the Government”.

The mass protest is to be held in the form of a protest march, commencing from the Elphinstone Theatre in Colombo 10 at 3 p.m. and proceeding towards Colombo. (NewsWire)
