The Sri Lanka Police have prevented protesters engaged in a large-scale anti-government protest in Colombo today (02) from marching toward the Fort Railway Station.

The protest commenced in Maradana, with multiple groups, including political parties and trade unions in participation.

The main opposition party, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), the Frontline Socialist Party (FSP), the Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU), the Inter-University Students Federation (IUSF), and the Young Journalists Association of Sri Lanka (YJASL) announced their participation last week.

The mass protest comes after representatives of the groups signed a joint statement against the alleged suppression by the government, in Colombo on 25th October 2022.

SJB MP Mujibur Rahuman, Samagi Vanitha Balawegaya (SVB) National Organiser Hirunika Premachandra, SLFP Propaganda Secretary Thisara Gunasinghe, FSP Education Secretary Pubudu Jayagoda, Duminda Nagamuwa of the FSP, CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin, IUSF Acting Convenor Terrance Rodrigo, civil activist Dhanizh Ali, and YJASL Secretary M.F.M. Fazeer were among those who signed the joint statement.

According to the representatives, the mass protest is being carried out as “the first step in ousting President Ranil Wickremesinghe and the Government”. (NewsWire)
