Four arrested with Rs. 400 Mn worth of smuggled gold

Four Sri Lankans have been arrested with smuggled gold worth Rs. 400 million at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake.

Sri Lanka Customs Spokesperson Sudantha Silva said the suspects were arrested on arrival at the airport by officials from the Customs Unit today.

The suspects were arrested with 22kg of smuggled gold which had been concealed in their baggage. 

Sudantha Silva said that gold jewelry, including chains and bangles, and gold dust were among the confiscated smuggled gold.

Among the suspects, three are reported to have arrived from Dubai, UAE via Chennai, India. 

The suspects were arrested based on a tip-off to Sri Lanka Customs by the Indian Intelligence Unit. (NewsWire)
