The Federation of University Teachers’ Associations has made an appeal to the Police to arrest the group that had allegedly assaulted the former Vice Chancellor of Peradeniya University Prof. Athula Senaratne and his son recently.

A group of nearly 300 students is reported to have attacked the former Vice Chancellor and his son, while also allegedly trying to forcibly enter their residence on Saturday (10).

The attack had taken place due to an argument with the former Vice Chancellor’s son having escalated into a clash.

Former Vice Chancellor of Peradeniya University Prof. Athula Senaratne and his son who were injured in the incident are receiving treatment at the Peradeniya Hospital.

The Federation of University Teachers’ Associations says the incident has been captured on the CCTV camera that has been installed at the former Vice Chancellor’s official residence.

The Federation further urged the Police to arrest the group involved in the attack by identifying them through the CCTV footage.

Meanwhile, Ada Derana reported that 10 of the students involved in the attack have been identified by the Police as of now.

The Police are reportedly taking steps to arrest the group of students that have been identified thus far.

Furthermore, an investigation has been launched into the incident by the Peradeniya University administration as well.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor of the university Prof. Terrence Madhujith said that the academic activities of the students who are arrested over the assault incident will be temporarily suspended.
