Weather Alert : Rain expected in several areas

The Department of Meteorology has predicted several spells of showers in various parts of Sri Lanka today.

The department stated that several spells of showers will occur in the North-Central, Eastern and Uva provinces and in the Matale district. 

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts during the afternoon or night. 

Fairly heavy showers above 50mm can be expected at some places in the Sabaragamuwa province and in the Kalutara and Galle districts.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Pottuvil via Trincomalee and Batticaloa. 

The Met Department stated showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the other sea areas around the Island during the afternoon or night.

Winds will be north-easterly and wind speed will be 25-35 kmph. It may increase up to 45-55 kmph at times over the sea areas off the coast extending from Trincomalee to Colombo via Kankasanthurai, Mannar and Puttalam and the sea areas off the coast extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil. 

Sea areas off the coast extending from Trincomalee to Colombo via Kankasanthurai, Mannar and Puttalam and the sea areas off the coast extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil will be rough at times. The other sea areas around the island will be moderate. 

Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers. (NewsWire)
