Weather Alert : Rain expected in several areas today

The Department of Meteorology predicts that showers are expected in several parts of Sri Lanka today.

The department stated that several spells of light showers will occur in the Eastern and Uva provinces and in the Matale district. 

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts during the afternoon or night. 

The public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers will also occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Trincomalee to Pottuvil via Batticaloa. 

The Met Department stated that showers or thundershowers will occur at a few places in the other sea areas around the Island during the afternoon or night.

Winds will be north-easterly and wind speed will be 25-35 kmph. It may increase up to 40-50 kmph at times over the sea areas off the coast extending from Trincomalee to Colombo via Kankasanthurai, Mannar and Puttalam and the sea areas off the coast extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil.

Sea areas off the coast extending from Trincomalee to Colombo via Kankasanthurai, Mannar and Puttalam and the sea areas off the coast extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil will be fairly rough at times. The other sea areas around the island will be moderate. (NewsWire)
