January 26, 2023 at 9:13 AM

The rainy weather condition will enhance today (26) and tomorrow (27) in several parts of Sri Lanka, the Department of Meteorology stated.

A representative for the department stated that the rainy weather condition will enhance due to a depression in the Bay of Bengal.

He further said that thereby, heavy rains can be expected at times in the Eastern, Uva, and Central provinces and in the Hambantota district.

The Met Department official said that thundershowers may also occur in the Western, Northeastern, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and Central provinces in the afternoon or night.

However, the rainy weather may decrease over the weekend and enhance again in the next few days, he said.

In its general forecast for today, the Department of Meteorology says heavy showers are expected in several areas of Sri Lanka.

Showers or thundershowers are expected at several places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts during the afternoon or night.

Several light showers are likely in the Eastern and Uva provinces and in the Hambantota and Polonnaruwa districts.

The public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimise damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Hambantota to Trincomalee via Pottuvil during the afternoon or night.

Winds will be north-easterly and wind speed will be 20-30 kmph. Wind speed may increase up to 40 kmph at times over the sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar, and from Pottuvil to Matara via Hambanthota

Sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar, and from Pottuvil to Matara via Hambanthota will be fairly rough at times. The other sea areas around the island will be slight.

Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers. (NewsWire)
