According to Nimal Punchihewa, chairman of the Election Commission, there are only two circumstances that could cause the local government elections to be postponed.
The Chairman of the Election Commission said that the elections can now only be postponed through either a constitutionally-adopted act or by a court order.
He also said that the local government elections could be held even under a new Election Commission, and that the newly appointed members also don’t have powers to change the decision taken by the current commission, which has been done according to the election laws. (NewsWire)
