According to the Police, investigations have revealed that the death threats to members of the Election Commission were made via phone calls from a foreign country.

Police Media Spokesperson SSP Nihal Thalduwa stated that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has begun an investigation into the relevant phone calls.

So far, three members of the Election Commission have received death threats via phone calls, and they have filed complaints with the police.

SSP Nihal Thalduwa further said that preliminary investigations have been launched in response to the complaints received.

Member of the Election Commission M. M. Mohamed received death threats over the phone on January 27th demanding he resigns from the Commission.

Meanwhile, Commission Member S. B. Diwaratne, who received such threats earlier this month, was reportedly threatened again on the aforementioned day.

On 18th January, two members of the Election Commission, S. B. Diwaratne and K. P. P Pathirana, received death threats demanding that they resign from their positions, prompting the Criminal Investigation Department to launch an investigation (CID).

They were also given the necessary police protection after informing the Chairman of the Commission, and the CID also inspected their homes and took statements from those related. (NewsWire)
