Weather Alert for next 36 hours

The depression over the Southeast and adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal lies about 290 km east of Trincomalee and is very likely to move nearly westwards this evening (31), the Department of Meteorology stated. 

The department stated that thereafter, it is likely to recurve gradually west-southwestwards and cross the Sri Lanka coast tomorrow (01).

Issuing the weather forecast for the next 36 hours from 04.00 pm today, the department further stated that thereby, cloudy skies will prevail over most parts of the island and showers or thundershowers will occur at times.

The department stated that very heavy showers of about 150mm are likely at some places in the Northern, North-central, Northwestern and Eastern provinces. Heavy showers above 100mm are likely in some places elsewhere.

Strong winds of about 50-60 kmph can be expected at times over the northern, North-central, Eastern, Northwestern and Central provinces and strong winds of about 50-60 kmph can be expected elsewhere.

The public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. (NewsWire)
