The Catholic Church of Sri Lanka has slammed President Ranil Wickremesinghe over the celebrations planned to commemorate the 75th Independence Day of Sri Lanka.

Addressing the media today, Reverend Father Cyril Gamini Fernando of the Catholic Church said that the question at hand is if the country is capable of bearing the expense of such a show at this juncture.

“Sri Lanka is in the midst of a severe economic crisis and several people are severely affected as a result of a shortage of many essential items, including medicines, fuel, and food. Even school children are affected due to the incapability of providing textbooks,” he revealed.

Reverend Father Cyril Gamini Fernando questioned what the government intends to mark as independence when the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) is being used to violate the rights of peaceful protesters, several people have lost their jobs, and the local industry and various essential sectors having been severely impacted.

He further said that the Independence Day celebrations being organized at a time when the country is bankrupt and with a large expenditure is considered a crime against the citizens. (NewsWire)
