Supermarkets across several European countries have reported major disruptions to refrigeration and freezer systems following suspected cyberattacks, with temperatures in some units reportedly rising to 50°C and forcing stores to discard spoiled food.

The incidents, reported on Monday (02), affected supermarkets in Sweden, Belgium, Luxembourg, Ireland and Estonia, while similar attacks were reported in France last month. Additional incidents have been reported in Finland and the Netherlands.

In Sweden, supermarket chains ICA and Coop reported refrigeration failures at several outlets. At an ICA store in Sjöbo, southern Sweden, temperatures in refrigerators and freezers were reportedly changed remotely to 50°C, leaving food products unsuitable for sale.

Coop confirmed that six of its stores were affected, while Sweden’s national cybersecurity centre said it was responding to multiple incidents involving supermarket cooling systems.

In Belgium, supermarket operator Delhaize reported disruptions at dozens of stores across Belgium and neighbouring Luxembourg. Carrefour confirmed that 15 of its Belgian outlets were affected, while five Spar stores also experienced refrigeration problems.

Some affected supermarkets temporarily removed fresh and frozen products from sale, although distribution centres and deliveries continued operating normally.

In Ireland, supermarket chain SuperValu confirmed that refrigeration systems at 13 stores had been affected by a cyber incident, prompting the removal of chilled and frozen products.

Estonia also reported an attack involving a supermarket refrigeration control system. Technology supplier Kitman Coldtech said attackers gained access to a computer controlling cooling temperatures and raised them to 50°C. The incident was resolved within minutes, with no significant damage reported.

Reports from Finland and the Netherlands have also emerged, although the extent of the latest disruptions in those countries remains unclear. Dutch supermarket operator Ahold Delhaize had separately reported a cybersecurity incident to police in the Netherlands in October.

The latest incidents follow a large-scale cyberattack in France in October, when hackers reportedly gained remote access to refrigeration systems at hundreds of supermarkets.

Temperatures in some French cooling units were raised to more than 50°C, resulting in extensive food losses and fires at some locations. Supermarket chains including Carrefour, Intermarché, Monoprix and Leclerc were among those affected.

The incidents have raised concerns about the security of internet-connected refrigeration systems, which allow operators to monitor temperatures and carry out maintenance remotely.

A trader in Kandy has been fined by the Kandy Magistrate’s Court for refusing to sell Litro Gas cylinders despite having stocks available, the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) said.

The court also ordered the confiscation of 28 Litro Gas cylinders, each weighing 12.5 kg, discovered during a raid conducted by CAA officers.

The trader operated D.D. Gurusinghe Trading, an authorised Litro Gas outlet on Kotugodella Street in Kandy.

According to the CAA, the raid was carried out on October 29 following complaints from consumers that the outlet was refusing to sell gas.

During the operation, a CAA investigation officer posing as a customer attempted to purchase a 12.5 kg gas cylinder. However, the trader claimed that no cylinders were available.

A subsequent inspection of the premises revealed 28 Litro Gas cylinders in stock.

The cylinders were seized, and legal action was initiated against the trader before the Kandy Magistrate’s Court.

Following court proceedings, the trader was fined, while all 28 seized cylinders were ordered to be forfeited to the State.

Under Section 16(a) of the Consumer Affairs Authority Act, No. 9 of 2003, traders are prohibited from falsely claiming that goods are unavailable when they possess stocks intended for sale.

The CAA said inspections and raids would continue nationwide to prevent hoarding, misleading consumers and other unfair trading practices.

National Fertilizer Secretariat Director Chandana Lokuhewage emphasized that sufficient fertilizer stocks required for the Maha season are currently available within the country with distribution activities already underway.

Outlining the supply breakdown, the Director stated that 180,000 metric tons of urea are required for the Maha season. Around 33,000 metric tons have already been distributed at the regional level, while approximately 42,000 metric tons remain with companies. Additionally, three vessels carrying fertilizer arrived at the port late last month, with 98,700 metric tons of urea currently being unloaded. With incoming orders of 44,000 metric tons scheduled for November and December, a total of 218,000 metric tons of urea is available in the country.
Regarding mud fertilizers, imported TSP and local SSP are also available in adequate quantities. Distribution has reached 4,396 metric tons of TSP and 511 metric tons of SSP, while companies hold 16,700 metric tons of TSP and 5,000 metric tons of SSP. Further production of 21,000 metric tons of TSP and 5,000 metric tons of SSP has been initiated and with an additional 10,000 metric tons of SSP with companies, total mud fertilizer stocks with companies stand at approximately 31,000 metric tons.

For MOP fertilizer, the Maha season requirement is 57,000 metric tons, against which 57,500 metric tons are currently available in the country. Of this, about 5,000 metric tons have been distributed, leaving companies with 50,500 metric tons, alongside plans to import another 2,000 metric tons. All fertilizer stocks can now be obtained through Agrarian Services Centers and commercial outlets. (Newswire)

Opposition MP Dr. Harsha de Silva has criticised the government over the ongoing cooking gas shortage, saying many Sri Lankan families cannot afford to depend on food delivery services such as PickMe Food and Uber Eats and need gas to prepare meals at home.

Speaking about the difficulties faced by consumers, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP questioned the government’s failure to address the shortage, particularly the continued unavailability of Laugfs gas.

“Not everyone can afford PickMe Food or Uber Eats. Many families are struggling to manage three meals a day, and they depend on cooking at home. But there is no gas,” he said.

Harsha said the situation was particularly concerning at a time when the prices of wheat flour, bread and fuel had increased, adding further pressure on household budgets.

He also referred to his own experience, saying he had been unable to obtain a Laugfs gas cylinder and was managing because he had access to a Litro cylinder.

The MP raised questions about the difficulties facing Laugfs, referring to reported US sanctions against a Dubai-based subsidiary of the company over alleged dealings involving Iranian energy products.

However, he questioned why the government had been unable to find a solution to the Laugfs supply issue, which he described as a relatively straightforward problem affecting ordinary households.

Harsha also criticised the ruling Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), claiming that if the party were still in opposition, it would have organised protests over a similar situation.

The Inland Revenue Department (IRD) has urged the public to avoid unnecessary visits to its head office and regional offices to obtain Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) certificates, stating that applications can also be submitted online.

IRD Spokesperson Nandana Kumara said a TIN has been made mandatory for eight specified economic activities with effect from November 1, 2026.

The eight activities are:

1. Opening bank accounts.
2. Obtaining approval for building plans.
3. Registering motor vehicles.
4. Renewing motor vehicle licences.
5. Registering land and property.
6. Registering businesses.
7. Transferring shares in companies incorporated in Sri Lanka.
8. Obtaining credit cards.

He said obtaining a TIN has been a legal requirement for all individuals aged 18 and above since January 1, 2024, and the department continues to issue TINs to the public.

However, he requested those visiting IRD offices to obtain TIN certificates to approach the relevant sections only if they require them for one of the eight specified activities.

“There is no need to panic or rush. We expect the public’s cooperation in helping us manage the process efficiently,” he said.

Kumara said the public could apply for TIN certificates online, although the process takes some time as the information submitted needs to be verified.

Once the TIN has been processed, applicants do not need to visit a regional office, as the certificate will be sent to the address provided in the application.

He added that the certificate could subsequently be used for any transaction requiring a TIN. (Newswire)

According to the Ministry of Defence, the proposed programme aims to address the professional and financial challenges faced by service personnel after retirement, particularly those who served in non-technical roles.

The programme will focus on providing National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) and other recognised certifications to help former military personnel enter both local and international employment markets.

Training opportunities under consideration include:

– Electric Vehicle (EV) technology and automotive engineering
– Hotel management, pastry and bakery production
– Caregiving and preschool teacher training
– Mechatronics, electronics and robotics
– Firefighting and private security services
– Agriculture and cosmetology

Special attention will be given to employment opportunities in international and maritime sectors.

The discussion also explored ways to recognise the practical skills and professional experience gained by military personnel during their service through NVQ or diploma-level qualifications.

Officials proposed integrating existing military training programmes with courses offered by the Ranaviru Resource Centre and the Vocational Training Authority (VTA).

Islandwide operation launched to protect elephants and reduce human-elephant conflict

The Ministry of Environment has launched an islandwide operation named ‘Hasthi Sena’ to protect elephants from life-threatening dangers and minimise human-elephant conflict. According to the Ministry, the operation was launched today (02) in Galkiriyagama, in the North Western Wildlife Zone, with an initial focus on 17 elephants identified as being at risk. The programme is being jointly implemented by the Ministry of Environment, the Department of Wildlife Conservation and the Tri-Forces. Speaking at the launch, the Minister of Environment said the operation is expected to cover approximately 80 percent of areas inhabited by elephants, while the remaining 20 percent will be addressed through a separate programme. The initiative includes continuous raids and legal action against the use of illegal firearms, hakka patas (explosive bait), unauthorised electric fences and snares that pose threats to elephants. According to the Ministry, 60 military personnel participated in the initial operation, alongside 10 operational teams organised under six groups.
