Three Sri Lankan nationals kidnapped in Ethiopia have been rescued unharmed following a coordinated police operation, according to Fidel Post.

Six suspects, including two Ethiopians and four Pakistani nationals, were arrested for allegedly abducting the men and demanding a ransom of USD 90,000. 

Fidel Post reports that the victims had arrived in Ethiopia on May 23 for work opportunities before being taken directly from the airport in a Suzuki vehicle with a Code 2 license plate.

​The investigation began on May 26, 2026, after the Sri Lankan Embassy reported the disappearance of the three individuals to the Bole Sub-City Police Department.

Investigators tracked the victims using advanced digital surveillance, locating them in a residential house in Shashemene, Oromia Region. 

Security forces stormed the property, freeing the hostages and apprehending the suspects without incident.

The rescue was achieved through a joint effort involving the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS), the Federal Police, the Information Network Security Administration (INSA), and the Oromia Regional Police. (Newswire)

A group of Chinese nationals residing in Sri Lanka have allegedly abducted a fellow Chinese businessman and robbed him of approximately USD 60,000.

According to the Police, the victim, who operates a store on R.A. De Mel Mawatha in Colpetty, was abducted around 9:00 pm last Friday (22). 

He was reportedly taken away in a vehicle and held captive in a building for about a day.

During his confinement, the suspects allegedly carried out the robbery by transferring the money online. 

The Police said the suspects had later abandoned him on a roadside on Saturday afternoon (23). 

The victim is reported to have received treatment at a private hospital in Narahenpita for injuries sustained during the abduction.

The Police said he had filed an official complaint with the Colpetty Police last evening. Investigations are underway into the incident. (Newswire)

A tense situation has been reported at the Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha after it was reported that two National People’s Power (NPP) members who were on their way to the council today (27 June) had been abducted.

It is reported that the two NPP members had, reportedly, been abducted while on their way to the election to appoint the Chairman of the Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha. 

As a result, a situation has arisen preventing the council from holding its session.

The Sri Lanka Police has felicitated a youth who had attempted to rescue a 19-year-old girl who was abducted in the Davulagala area in Gampola in January. 

The youth, who had sustained several injuries in the incident, was recognized for his heroic rescue attempt.

Video footage emerged of the girl being kidnapped by a group in a van on 11 January, with many social media users praising the youth for his brave attempt to rescue the schoolgirl.

A video showing a woman being forcibly abducted by two individuals, one dressed as a police officer, has sparked widespread concern on social media.

The incident occurred on January 18, 2025, outside a private hospital hostel in Wellawatte. 

Authorities identified the impersonator as a former police officer who had been suspended from duty for not reporting for work. He was arrested by the Wellawatte Police.

The abductors robbed the woman of approximately Rs. 31,500 and other valuables before abandoning her near Welikada.

Police confirmed that the van used in the abduction was rented. Investigations are ongoing to locate other suspects involved in the crime.

Two youths who had abducted an 18-year-old girl from her house have been remanded until 20 January by the Avissawella Magistrate’s Court.

It is reported that the girl was involved in a romantic relationship with one youth living in the same area, and he had abducted her after her family had opposed the relationship.

The suspect had entered the girl’s house and had threatened her mother and grandmother with a firearm, after which he had kidnapped her. 

Following investigations conducted by the Deraniyagala Police, two youths were arrested over the abduction, while the weapon used in the incident was also taken into Police custody.

A youth who had attempted to rescue a 19-year-old girl who was abducted in the Davulagala area in Gampola recently, has sustained several injuries due to his rescue attempt.

Speaking to the media, the youth said he had partially climbed into the vehicle and had fought with the abductors trying to get them to release the girl.

He said there were three persons inside the back of the vehicle at the time of the abduction, but they had continued to drive off, eventually pushing him out of the vehicle.

The youth said he had fallen onto the road, during which he had sustained injuries to his face, hands, and leg. 

Video footage emerged of the girl being kidnapped by a group in a van on Saturday morning (11 Jan). Many social media users had praised the youth for his brave attempt to rescue the schoolgirl.

Police investigations revealed she had been residing at a hostel in the Handessa area, and had been abducted at a time when she and a friend had been leaving for school.

The Police said it has also been found that the main suspect in the abduction was the girl’s relative from her paternal side, and it was caused over marriage issues.

The driver of the van has been arrested as of now, while the vehicle used for the abduction has also been taken into Police custody. However, the whereabouts, of the missing girl and the suspects remain unknown.

A 28-year-old man was arrested for abducting and holding hostage a doctor in the Hikkaduwa area yesterday.

The Police said that based on a tip-off, the doctor was found at a house in the Thelwatta area in Meetiyagoda.

The suspect, a resident of the Thelwatte area, was also apprehended by the Police. 

The doctor has been handed over to the Hikkaduwa Police for safety reasons.

Five suspects have been apprehended for abducting a businessman in Matara Town yesterday.

According to the Police, the suspects had arrived in a car and had abducted the businessman.

Following information that they were in the Malimbada area, the Matara Police arrested the suspects along with the car used to abduct the businessman, while the businessman was later handed over to the Police. 

The suspects aged between 28 and 53 years are residents of Denipitiya and Thelijjawila. 

Investigations have revealed that the businessman, who was travelling to Matara for personal work, was abducted over a financial dispute.

An 18-year-old student of a private university who had been abducted along with his vehicle recently has been found, it was reported.

The Police said three suspects from the same private university have been apprehended over the abduction, while the victim’s car has also been retrieved.

The victim, who is a resident of Asiri Mawatha in Kalubowila, had been abducted on Monday (Dec 04).

Investigations reveal that the boy had dropped his father at the Katunayake Airport and had returned home and left again during which he had been abducted.

The Police said the boy was obstructed near the Dehiwala Municipal Council and moved into a van, after which the van was abandoned at a house and he was moved back into his car and driven to Matale. 

Upon reaching a house in Matale, the suspects had threatened the victim to sign over land in Thihariya belonging to his father. 

The victim was also allowed to inform his mother of the abduction after which she had filed a complaint with the Kohuwala Police. 

The Kohuwala Police had then summoned the father of the Chief suspect involved in the abduction, who was made to convince them to return home, after which the suspects had been apprehended. 

Investigations have revealed that the suspects had carried out the abduction over an old financial dispute between the fathers of the victim and the chief suspect.

Three including a woman have been arrested for allegedly abducting and threatening a youth from the Thalduwa area in Avissawella.

According to the Police, a 25-year-old youth had been abducted, held captive, and threatened by the suspects on July 24.

Based on a complaint filed on the incident, the Avissawella Police arrested two men, and a woman who had aided them, while they had also taken into custody a pickup truck used for the abduction.

The two men have been identified as 26-year-old and 27-year-old, residents of the Avissawella and Getaheththa areas, and the woman is a 50-year-old resident of Avissawella.

Police investigations have revealed that the suspects have abducted the youth over a personal dispute.

The Police have warned an 11-year-old schoolboy over a fake complaint on an alleged abduction attempt, it was reported.

According to Lankadeepa, the Police stated that the child had filed a fake complaint with the Narahenpita Police.

In his complaint, he had claimed that a group in a van had attempted to abduct him while returning from school, but he had managed to escape from them.

However, during interrogation, the child had revealed that he had created the story after watching a video on social media on recent reports of attempts to abduct children in Sri Lanka. 

Investigations have revealed that the student from a boys’ school in Bambalapitiya had informed his father that a group in a van had attempted to abduct him while returning home from school along Park Road in Colombo on Tuesday (23).

The student had further informed the father that he had escaped from them after which the father and son had filed a complaint with the Police.

The Medawachchiya Police have launched a probe into a complaint on the alleged attempt to abduct a 16-year-old girl.

The Kandy Police has launched a probe to arrest a businessman from Polgahawela over the abduction of a 16-year-old child over a dispute pertaining to a monetary transaction with the victim’s mother.

The Grandpass Police have commenced an investigation into the abduction of the owner of a chain of building material stores by a group that had impersonated officers of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

According to Daily News, the victim, who is the owner of several building material shops in Messenger Street, Colombo 12 and Kandy, had been released only after handing over a ransom of Rs. 7 million to the suspects.

In his complaint, the victim stated that two men on a motorcycle had blocked his path claiming to be from the CID and had taken him in a van in which there were three other men.

The group had blindfolded the businessman and taken him to a house in which they had threatened him with a knife demanding Rs. 10 million but had later demanded Rs. 7 million as a ransom for his release.

The businessman had paid Rs. 7 million to the suspects with the help of a friend after which he had been released near the Dematagoda Railway Grounds.
