Two people have been killed, and three others injured, after debris fell from the successful interception of a missile by UAE air defences in Abu Dhabi on Thursday.

The incident occurred on Sweihan Street, where multiple vehicles were also damaged. Abu Dhabi Media has said that authorities are investigating the incident and have not yet identified the victims.

Residents have been urged to rely on official sources for information and avoid circulating unverified reports.

On Tuesday, a civilian contractor working with the UAE Armed Forces died in a routine mission in Bahrain following an Iranian attack. Authorities then said that the “brazen Iranian attack” resulted in injuries to five members of the UAE Ministry of Defence.

Since the beginning of the Iranian aggression on February 28, the attacks have resulted in the martyrdom of two armed forces personnel, the deaths of six civilians of Pakistani, Nepalese, Bangladeshi, and Palestinian nationalities.

Injuries recorded so far range from minor to critical and the vicims are nationals of the following countries: The UAE, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Philippines, Pakistan, Iran, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Azerbaijan, Yemen, Uganda, Eritrea, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Bahrain, Comoros, Turkey, Iraq, Nepal, Nigeria, Oman, Jordan, Palestine, Ghana, Indonesia, and Sweden. Suspicions have been raised over the death of a Sri Lankan youth who was employed in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), it was reported. 

According to Ada Derana, relatives of the deceased, Kavindu Sathsara, have alleged that the boy had died under suspicious circumstances. 

The parents of the deceased have requested the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) to immediately focus their attention on the matter.

The deceased, who is a resident of the Gonapeenuwala area in Beddegama, had travelled to the UAE 18 months ago and had been employed as a chef at a restaurant in Abu Dhabi. 

Stating that the boy contacted his parents and friends daily, his parents revealed that, however, he had not contacted them since January 06, 2024.

Upon inquiring from the restaurant, an official had informed the parents of the boy’s demise. 

The parents have requested the SLBFE and relevant authorities to find the cause of the death and to help bring back his body to Sri Lanka. (NewsWire)

Emirati low-cost airline, Air Arabia has announced operations of three weekly flights between the United Arab Emirates and Sri Lanka from next year.

The Airline stated that flight operations will commence on January 03, 2024, between Abu Dhabi International Airport and Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake. 

The addition of the Colombo route marks the carrier’s 34th destination.

According to Daily News, this move is part of Air Arabia Abu Dhabi’s ongoing strategy to enhance connectivity to and from the capital.

India is seeking investments from Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) and Mubadala in several areas, including renewable and digital sectors, said Secretary in India’s Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) Rajesh Kumar Singh.

The official was in the UAE and held meetings with the senior officials of the two Abu Dhabi entities, the government-run Press Trust of India reported.

In April, Mubadala Investment Co. and Canadian pension investment manager British Columbia Investment Management Corporation invested in Cube Highways Trust, an infrastructure investment trust in India.

Elsewhere, Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of State for Foreign Trade, said the value of bilateral non-oil trade between the two nations reached $45.5 billion in the first 11 months of the UAE-India Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, a 6.9% increase year-on-year.

He stated that bilateral trade surged ahead in Q1, 2023, climbing 24.7% on the previous quarter, with UAE non-oil exports to India rising 33%. (Zawya)
