Parliamentarian Ali Sabri Raheem has been expelled from the All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC) following a comprehensive inquiry conducted by the Disciplinary Committee of the party, the ACMC announced.

Issuing a statement, the Chairman of the Party, Ameer Ali confirmed MP Raheem’s expulsion from the ACMC Party which is led by MP Rishad Bathiudeen.

“MP Ali Sabri Raheem had been expelled from the party membership following a comprehensive inquiry commenced by the Disciplinary Committee of the party. The Political Authority further found that the conduct of MP Ali Sabri Raheem, smuggling gold and mobile phones, has brought disrepute to the ACMC, is contrary to the conduct expected of a Member of Parliament representing the ACMC and amounts to a serious breach of Party discipline.

“It should be pointed out that as per the Electoral Agreement signed between the ACMC and Muslim National Alliance (MNA) during the last General Elections, MP Raheem contested under the symbol of the MNA. Thus, the notification of expulsion had been sent to MP Raheem as well as to the Secretary General of MNA, Mr. Naeemullah,” he said.

Ameer Ali further said MNA’s Naeemullah was handed over the letter and that he hoped the MNA would take immediate action in this regard as promised.

Puttalam District MP Ali Sabri Raheem was detained by Sri Lanka Customs officials upon his arrival at the Katunayake Airport from Dubai in May this year.

MP Raheem was found to have undeclared gold, weighing over 3 kilograms and valued at Rs. 74 million and 91 smartphones valued at more than Rs. 4.2 million, which were in his luggage.

The MP was fined Rs. 7.5 million and released on payment of same while the undeclared gold and mobile phones were confiscated. (NewsWire)
