Giribala Singh, the mother-in-law and retired judge of Indian model and actor Twisha Sharma, who was allegedly found hanging at her marital home earlier this month, was arrested on Thursday in Bhopal by the CBI.

CBI officials reached Giribala Singh’s residence at around 10:30 am and questioned her for several hours before formally arresting her at around 5:10 pm.

During today’s investigation, the CBI also carried out a detailed forensic examination at the residence using a high-intensity 3D camera, recording of the entire premises and scanned nearby locations to determine whether the alleged incident spot was visible from neighbouring terraces or balconies.

Giribala Singh is facing grave charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, including: Section 80(2), for dowry death; Section 85, Cruelty to a woman by her husband or relatives; Section 3(5), acts done by several persons in furtherance of a common intention. Additionally, she has been charged under Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961.

The arrest comes a day after the Madhya Pradesh High Court cancelled her anticipatory bail plea and set aside the relief previously granted to Giribala Singh on May 15 by the 10th Additional Sessions Judge in Bhopal.

“The High Court has taken serious note of certain observations in the case, like seven antemortem injuries on the body of Twisha Sharma, indicating towards a serious crime, non-cooperation by Giribala Singh despite several notices and WhatsApp chats indicating mental harassment of Twisha Sharma. Looking at all this, the High Court has rejected the anticipatory bail of Giribala Singh. Now, it is up to the CBI to decide whether or not a custodial interrogation needs to be done,” Advocate General of Madhya Pradesh Prashant Singh said.

During the hearing, lawyers appearing for Twisha Sharma’s family argued that the victim was allegedly subjected to mental harassment and was “badly stuck” in her matrimonial home.

The high court observed that statements recorded from Twisha’s parents and relatives consistently alleged harassment by both Samarth Singh and Giribala Singh from the very first day of the investigation.

The high court also took serious note of allegations that Giribala Singh, a retired judicial officer trained in cyber crime, cyber forensics and crime scene management, may have used her expertise to tamper with evidence and influence the course of the investigation.

Last week, Samarth Singh, Giribala’s son and Twisha’s husband, surrendered before a court after being on the run for 10 days.

Giribala Singh – a retired judge, along with her lawyer son Samarth – faces charges related to dowry harassment.

The CBI on Monday formally took over the probe into the May 12 death of Twisha Sharma.

The agency re-registered the FIR earlier lodged by the state police against Samarth Singh and Giribala Singh.

According to the CBI FIR, Giribala Singh had demanded Rs 2 lakh from Twisha’s family at the time of vidai, which was given by the victim’s family on her insistence. (NDTV)

One of India’s most celebrated actors, Dharmendra, passed away at the age of 89 on Monday (November 24), according to IANS. The news comes after a morning of heightened speculation, triggered by an ambulance, accompanied by tight security, arriving at his Mumbai home. This marks the actor’s second major health concern within a month.

Dharmendra’s health in recent days

Dharmendra had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital last week as his condition worsened. Reports of him being placed on ventilator support intensified worry across the industry. His children—Bobby Deol, Sunny Deol, and Esha Deol—along with Hema Malini, were frequently spotted at the hospital. Several Bollywood personalities, including Shah Rukh Khan with son Aryan and Salman Khan, visited to check on the veteran actor.

While the actor was in the hospital, a wave of false death reports caused widespread panic among fans. Dharmendra’s family stepped in quickly to shut down the rumours.

He remained under treatment for several days before being discharged on November 12. 

Following his return home, the Deol family released an official note requesting privacy and expressing gratitude toward fans and media.

Veteran Indian actor Govardhan Asrani, fondly known as Asrani, died on Monday at the age of 84 after a prolonged illness. He had been hospitalised for five days due to age-related ailments.

Asrani was born on January 1, 1940, in Jaipur, into a middle-class Sindhi family. His father ran a carpet shop, but Asrani showed no interest in the family business. He completed his early education at St. Xavier’s School and later graduated from Rajasthan College, Jaipur. To support his studies, he worked as a voice artist at All India Radio in Jaipur.

From 1960 to 1962, Asrani learnt acting from Sahitya Kalbhai Thakkar, and later joined the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, in 1964. 

He made his acting debut in Bollywood with the 1967 film ‘Hare Kaanch Ki Choodiyan’, playing the friend of actor Biswajeet. During this time, he also starred in several Gujarati films as a lead actor.

One of the most memorable roles played by Asrani was that of a jailer in Sholay. He also gave versatile performances in films by acclaimed directors like Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Gulzar, and BR Chopra. 

Asrani was also a close friend of Rajesh Khanna, and starred in around 25 films with him, including Bawarchi in 1972. 

After 2000, Asrani carved a niche in Priyadarshan’s comedy films, doing memorable roles in films such as Hera Pheri, Aamdani Atthani Kharcha Rupaiyaa, Baghban, Chup Chup Ke,  Garam Masala, Bol Bachchan, and many more. Asrani was also a part of the 2023 comedy Dream Girl 2.

Asrani is married to actress Manju Bansal, whom he met during the filming of Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar and Namak Haram. The couple has a son, Naveen Asrani.

Sri Lankan veteran actor Nalin Pradeep Udawela passed away around 5:45 am this morning (23 Sept.).

According to reports, he had been receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit of the Maharagama Apeksha Hospital.

At the time of his passing, he was 56 years old and a father of two.

Indian Tamil actor Daniel Balaji passed away due to cardiac arrest at a private hospital in Chennai on Friday. He was 48.

According to reports, Daniel breathed his last at a hospital in Kottivakam, where he was admitted due to chest pain.

Daniel Balaji began his career on the small screen, earning widespread acclaim for his role in the serial Chitthi. 

He went on to star in over 40 films, including Kaakha Kaakha, Polladhavan, Vettaiyadu Vilayaadu, and Vada Chennai. The actor also featured in Telugu and Malayalam movies.

Actor Lee Sun-kyun of the Oscar-winning “Parasite” was found dead in an apparent suicide Wednesday while facing an investigation over suspected drug use.

A man in his 40s was found unconscious in a car at a park in central Seoul at 10:30 a.m., and the police later identified him as Lee. In the passenger seat was a charcoal briquette.

The police earlier received a report that Lee left home after writing a memo akin to a suicide note and that his car was gone.

“As he was pronounced dead, he wasn’t taken to hospital,” a fire official said.

Lee has gone through three rounds of police questioning on suspicions of using marijuana and other illegal drugs at the home of a hostess working at a high-end bar in Seoul’s Gangnam district on multiple occasions since early this year, including last Saturday.

The actor claimed he was tricked by the hostess into taking the drugs and that he did not know what he was taking.

Lee tested negative in both the brief reagent test conducted during police investigations and the lab-based drug test by the National Forensic Service last month.

The previous day, Lee submitted a polygraph test request to the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency charged with the investigation, claiming his innocence.
