A special gazette notification has been issued designating all Divisional Secretariat divisions in Sri Lanka as African Swine Fever-infected or high-risk areas.

This gazette notification has been issued by the Director General of Animal Production and Health, Hemali Kotelawala, and is valid for a period of three months from 13 June 2025.

The special gazette notification also designated pigs as high-risk animals.

The gazette states this step has been taken as African Swine Fever has spread in various Divisional Secretariats of Sri Lanka in the past few months and is likely to spread further.

Accordingly, it is prohibited to transport, remove, carry, or dispose of risky pigs, pig meat, and related products, whether within or outside of infected or high-risk areas, without a permit issued by the designated divisional veterinary officer.

Additionally, slaughtering infected animals for meat or using high-risk animals to operate live animal markets is also forbidden.
