The opposition, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), has established power in the Nivithigala Pradeshiya Sabha in Ratnapura and the Ambagamuwa Pradeshiya Sabha in Nuwara Eliya.

SJB candidate Ajith Nawalage was elected Chairman of the Nivithigala Pradeshiya Sabha during its inaugural session held today.  

Meanwhile, SJB candidate Kapila Nakandala was elected Chairman of the Ambagamuwa Pradeshiya Sabha during the council’s inaugural session yesterday.

Both SJB candidates had been elected after securing a majority of votes during elections held at the two local councils. 

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya had secured a majority of seats in both local councils in the 2025 Local Government Elections. (Newswire)
