Sri Lankan Police opened fire on a suspicious lorry in Ambalangoda after it ignored repeated orders to stop, eventually halting the vehicle in Wandaduwa. 

Officers from the Ambalangoda Police Station’s Special Motorcycle Unit had signalled a suspicious lorry heading towards Ambalangoda to stop in the Andadola area under the Ambalangoda Police Division this morning.

However, the driver had ignored Police orders and continued, prompting officers to pursue the vehicle. When it attempted to flee further, the Police opened fire in the Wandaduwa area to bring it to a halt.

Upon inspection, the lorry was found carrying 10 buffaloes and 4 cows, with one buffalo already slaughtered. 

Two suspects inside were arrested along with 5,200 milligrams of ‘ICE’ narcotics and the vehicle. The suspects, aged 42 and 46, are residents of Akurassa and Beruwala. 

Meanwhile, the driver and another suspect have escaped, and the Ambalangoda Police are conducting further investigations to apprehend them. (Newswire)

The manager of a business establishment in Ambalangoda town was shot this morning (22).

It is reported that the manager succumbed to his injuries at the scene following the shooting.

According to the Police, the attack was carried out by two individuals who arrived on a motorcycle and fled afterwards.

Initial investigations reveal that the shooting was the result of a clash between two rival criminal gangs.

CCTV footage of the shooting incident near the Ambalangoda Urban Council, in which a businessman was killed, has been released to the media. 

The video footage shows a red car knocking over the motorcycle of the victim, after which the victim was chased by the gunman and shot.

The suspects are later seen fleeing in the car after the shooting. 

The victim, who sustained serious injuries in the shooting, succumbed to injuries at the Balapitiya Hospital. 

The deceased is a 54-year-old businessman. The Police are conducting investigations to arrest the suspects involved in the shooting. (Newswire)

The individual who was injured in a shooting reported near the Ambalangoda Urban Council premises today has succumbed to injuries. 

Sri Lanka Police have clarified that the victim in the shooting is not a councillor, but a businessman.

According to Police Media Spokesperson, ASP Wootler, the businessman, a seafood trader, was admitted to the Balapitiya Hospital following the shooting.

ASP Wootler further said that preliminary investigations have revealed that the attack was carried out by a group that arrived in a white vehicle and fled the scene immediately after.

Initial Police inquiries suggest that the target of the shooting was the husband of the elder sister of “Karandeniya Sudda,” a suspected member of an organized crime gang.

A 13-year-old school student is reported to have died by suicide in the Ambalangoda area today. 

The Police said the child, a grade 07 student, was found dead at his residence this morning. 

According to the Police, the parents of the child have claimed emotional distress to be the cause of his death. 

The Ambalangoda Police is conducting investigations into the incident. 

Several student deaths by suicide have been reported in Sri Lanka in the past few weeks, prompting investigations by the authorities. 

Among school students, a 16-year-old girl had died by suicide in Kotahena in April. At the time, her parents alleged that her death was linked to her being sexually abused by a male teacher at her former school in Bambalapitiya and also being humiliated at a private tuition institute in front of fellow students over the incident.

Among university students, the first incident was reported from the Sabaragamuwa University, where a second-year male student had died by suicide at his house, due to alleged ragging.

An infant has been found abandoned near a house in the Devagoda area in Madampagama, Ambalangoda. 

According to Ambalangoda Police Headquarters, the child has been admitted to the Balapitiya Base Hospital. 

The infant, assumed to be months old, had been found abandoned near the wall of a house in the Devagoda area.

A woman who had seen movement near the wall had inspected the area and had found the abandoned infant, following which she had informed area residents and then the Police.

A female school student was apprehended for the possession of heroin in the Kurundhuwatte area in Ambalangoda last evening.

It is reported that she was arrested by officials from the Elpitiya Divisional Crime Unit. 

The arrested girl is a 17-year-old student of a state school in Ambalangoda, preparing to sit for the GCE Ordinary Level Examination this year.

The Police said preliminary investigations have revealed that the girl’s brother who had been remanded for drug peddling had returned home three days before. 

In his absence, his wife had operated the drug business, and as she was a mother to a young child and could not meet clients, she had used the girl to meet clients and receive payments. (Newswire)

Police have sought public assistance to apprehend a suspect, wanted in connection to a shooting incident in the Ambalangoda area in November 2024.

According to the Police, two gunmen on a motorcycle had shot dead a man and a woman who had been travelling on a motorcycle in the Urawatte area along the Galle- Colombo main road on 10 November 2024.

Investigations by the Ambalangoda Police had led to the identification of one suspect, a resident of the Batapola Police Division, but the suspect is reported to have fled the area.

An individual on a motorcycle has been shot dead in the Gonnaduwa area on the Kuligoda- Meetiyagoda Road in Ambalangoda today (28).

The Police stated that the deceased has been identified as a 42-year-old resident of Usmudullawa, Madampagama.
