Sri Lanka all-rounder Kamindu Mendis and former captain Angelo Mathews have progressed in the ICC Men’s Test Player Rankings after contributing to their team’s 192-run victory in Chattogram that helped complete a 2-0 win in the ICC World Test Championship series against Bangladesh.

Kamindu Mendis’s scores of 92 not out and nine have lifted him 18 places to 46th position in the batters’ list while his three-wicket haul in the second innings sees him gain 46 slots and reach 117th position among bowlers.

Mathews, who enjoyed a career-high third rank in August 2014, has inched up two places to 25th after scores of 23 and 56.

In what is another notable movement for a Sri Lankan batter, Kusal Mendis has progressed three places to 52nd after scoring 93 in the first innings.

In the bowling rankings, Asitha Fernando has moved up seven places to 27th position after a four-wicket haul in the first innings, Vishwa Fernando is up from 43rd to 41st with three wickets in the match and Lahiru Kumara has gone from 46th to 44th after finishing with six wickets in Chattogram.

Bangladesh opener Zakir Hasan, who scored 54 and 19, has gone up three places to 75th position in the Test batting rankings while Mehidy Hasan Miraz is up from 99th to 88th after a valiant 81 not out in the second innings. Mominul Haque has gained four slots and is in 46th position after scoring 83 runs in his two innings.

Debutant fast bowler Hasan Mahmud has entered the Test bowling rankings in 95th position after grabbing six wickets in the match.

The BCB has sought an explanation from Allan Donald, the Bangladesh team’s fast bowling coach, for his comments on Angelo Mathews’ timed out dismissal following the World Cup match in Delhi on November 6.

In an interview with CricBlog.net, conducted soon after the team returned to their hotel in Delhi, Donald had said “it was disappointing to see” that kind of a dismissal and he found it “really difficult to watch that unfold”.

“He could have given his personal views at a later time,” a BCB official said. “He is part of the team management so when the team takes a decision, speaking about it publicly is a breach of the code of conduct. He could have spoken about it within the team or he could have spoken directly to the player. He could have informed the BCB, but not in public.”

Donald getting pulled up was an expected reaction from the BCB as a member of the Bangladesh team management criticising the team’s decision publicly has been generally frowned upon by the board.

But the BCB is unlikely to take any action because this is effectively Donald’s last assignment with the Bangladesh team. He has reportedly informed the board that he won’t continue once his contract runs out at the end of the World Cup. Donald had been appointed in the role ahead of Bangladesh’s tour of South Africa in 2022.

Donald isn’t the only coaching staff member whose contract finishes with this tournament. Rangana Herath (spin-bowling coach), Shane McDermott (fielding coach), Nick Lee (head of physical performance) and Shrinivas Chandrasekaran (computer analyst) will also be out of contract. ESPNcricinfo understands that the BCB has issued letters to some of these coaches to continue till at least January 2. But it is not clear how many of them are retaining their current roles.

Bangladesh have two Tests scheduled against New Zealand at home from November 28 to December 10, before heading to New Zealand to play three ODIs and three T20Is from December 17 to 31.

S Sriram, who had joined as a technical consultant only for the World Cup, will also end his stint with the team. He had worked in a similar role with them during the 2022 T20 World Cup.

Head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe, who had joined in February, and assistant coach Nic Pothas, who came into the role in April, have time left in their respective contracts. They are likely to continue although ESPNcricinfo has learned that there are question marks about Hathurusinghe’s man-management skills.

Before the match against Sri Lanka, Hathurusinghe had said that the seven months he had since being appointed the head coach weren’t enough to prepare the team for the World Cup and his work would start after the tournament. (Cric Info)

Commentator and former Sri Lankan cricketer Marvan Attapattu says Angelo Mathews and Avishka Fernando would have been selected for the ODI World Cup squad, if it were up to him.

Speaking to Neth FM, Attapattu pointed out that Angelo Mathews holds the best ODI record for Sri Lanka after former Sri Lanka cricketer Kumar Sangakkara.

“If he is physically fit, he is an essential player for the Sri Lankan squad,” Attapattu said.

He further said that Avishka Fernando also holds a good record, including a century in a World Cup as well.

“We have an opening issue. Avishka is a great fielder as well. If he is physically fit, he will be considered an essential player for the team,” the former cricketer pointed out.

Marvan Attapattu believes that Sri Lanka is in need of at least two experienced players when facing a World Cup.

Commenting on his favourites to win the World Cup, Attapattu said India will be under tremendous pressure this time around, even though they have a good team.

He further revealed that among the teams, he looks forward to the performance of Bangladesh as it has a resemblance to Sri Lanka’s 1996 World Cup winning team.

Speaking of Sri Lanka, Attapattu believes if the confidence level is set well then Sri Lanka has the capacity to go far in the World Cup tournament.

“I would also love it if Sri Lanka won. However, I can’t surely say that Sri Lanka will win,” he added. (NewsWire)
