Cabinet approval has been granted to publish via a Gazette the new draft bill introducing the Anti-Terrorist Act, repealing the Prevention of Terrorism Act, and to submit it to Parliament for approval. 

According to the government, the Anti-Terrorist Act was prepared by the Legal Draftsman and was initially published in the Government Gazette in March 2023.

However, a number of parties, both local and international, had raised concerns regarding certain sections of the draft bill. 

Accordingly, the Ministry of Justice called for views and proposals formally from those who are interested in this regard through electronic media and the Minister of Justice had held discussions with certain parties himself. 

Considering all the views and proposals submitted, actions were taken to prepare a new draft bill by the Legal Draftsman by revising the original draft bill which was published in the government gazette. 

The government stated that clearance of the Attorney General has been granted to the new draft bill. 

Therefore, the Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval to the proposal submitted by the Minister of Justice to publish the new draft bill in the government gazette and thereby submit the same to the Parliament. (NewsWire)
