Nearly 500 staff of a private apparel factory in the Bakamuna area in Polonnaruwa have been hospitalised due to food poisoning early this morning.

According to media reports, the Bakamuna Police said the apparel factory workers had fallen ill after consuming food provided at the factory.

The ill apparel factory workers had been admitted to the Bakamuna and Aththanakadawala Hospitals. 

Hospital sources have revealed that the workers were not in critical condition and are undergoing treatment. (Newswire)

Reports have emerged of nearly 350 Sri Lankans employed at an apparel factory in the Sahabi area in Jordan facing dire conditions, due to the non-payment of salaries.

According to the affected group, the management of the factory has not paid salaries over the last 18 months.

They claim that this has resulted in the Sri Lankans being stuck in their hostels without food and water, and with some falling severely ill.

Making their plight known via a video message, the affected Sri Lankans further said that even though the Sri Lankan Embassy in Jordan has been informed of their situation, no probe or action has been taken in this regard yet. 

They have requested the Sri Lankan authorities to repatriate them before the situation results in the loss of lives. (NewsWire)

The Managing Director of a Board of Investment-registered apparel factory in the Halpe area in Katana has decided to close down the factory and leave Sri Lanka, following his assault by a group of unidentified individuals in March. 

A group of five had illegally entered the factory premises and had initially assaulted the security official on duty after which they had attacked the Apparel factory Managing Director, who is an Omani national, at his residence in the factory premises. 

It was reported that a gang allegedly backed by a politico in the Gampaha District had carried out the assault. 

The Omani businessman had been on an observation visit to Sri Lanka. Over 300 Sri Lankans are employed at his apparel factory which is the sister company of a famous Omani apparel chain. 

According to Ceylon Today, the Omani businessman has expressed his displeasure over the incident.

He has also accused the Sri Lankan Government of having failed to conduct a fair investigation into the assault so far. 

The Omani national added that as a result, he has no other option but to close the factory and leave Sri Lanka. (NewsWire)

The Managing Director and security officer of a Board of Investment – registered apparel factory in the Halpe area in Katana have been physically assaulted by a group of unidentified individuals yesterday.

The Police stated that the Managing Director of the apparel factory who is an Omani national has been admitted to the Sri Jayawardenapura Hospital, while the security officer has been admitted to the Negombo Hospital.

A group of five had illegally entered the factory premises last night and had initially assaulted the security official.

Thereafter, the group had broken into the residence of the Managing Director of the factory located at the factory premises and severely assaulted him.

The factory’s CEO has revealed that the management has been harassed by supporters of a politician from the area on multiple occasions. 

Over 300 Sri Lankans are employed at the apparel factory which is the sister company of a famous Omani apparel chain. 

The Omani victim has been identified as an investor and Managing Director of the apparel factory who was on an observation visit to Sri Lanka.
