The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court yesterday (16) ordered that the warrant issued against former cricketer Aravinda de Silva and his wife be recalled.

The couple had stood surety for Priyanka Niyomali Wijenayake, wife of the late SriLankan Airlines CEO Kapila Chandrasena, in connection with the Airbus bribery case involving an alleged USD 2 million payment.

The warrant had been issued earlier in the day by Magistrate Pasan Amarasena after the couple failed to appear before court to explain why their bail obligations should not be confiscated. 

They were required to present submissions as sureties but did not attend the hearing.

Later, lawyers representing the couple informed the court that they were unable to appear due to funeral rites of their mother. On that basis, the Magistrate ordered the withdrawal of the warrants.

Aravinda de Silva and his wife had previously stood surety for Priyanka Niyomali Wijenayake , who is also the younger sister of Aravinda’s wife. Their absence at Wednesday’s hearing prompted the initial warrant.

The case stems from the Airbus bribery scandal, in which Kapila Chandrasena was named a suspect.

Chandrasena died recently, with his body discovered at Aravinda de Silva’s residence.

The appointments were officially disclosed to the Colombo Stock Exchange through a notification issued by the company’s secretaries, Corporate Services (Private) Limited.

.The film, which depicts India’s historic 1983 Cricket World Cup victory, drew a packed audience, with the 1996 Sri Lanka World Cup-winning icons in attendance.

Indian Film Fest 2025 inaugurated by Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sunil Kumara Gamage and High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka Santosh Jha at PVR Cinemas, Colombo.

Speaking on the occasion Minister Gamage appreciated India’s film industry, particularly highlighting the contribution of films dedicated to sports.

High Commissioner underlined that the country-wide film festival is one of the first initiatives in the new year 2025 towards building stronger people to people connect between India and Sri Lanka.

Indian Film Fest 2025 will run across cities in Sri Lanka including Colombo, Badulla, Jaffna, Galle, Kurunegala, Matale, Matara, Monaragala and Nuwara Eliya throughout the week of 06-10 January.

The festival reached Monaragala with the screening of the films ‘Amma Kanakku’, ‘Vikram’ and ‘Jai Bhim’ at the Monaragala District Library Auditorium.

Sri Lanka cricketing legend Aravinda de Silva has expressed concerns over the national team’s selection process during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

Speaking during the “Truth with Chamuditha” program, Aravinda de Silva said cricketers’ mindset and their roles had not been defined properly and they were unsure of their performance objectives.

“When it comes to a World Cup, seniority is very important. If there was a policy on not including senior players for selection, but it changes, then measures should have been taken to bring them atleast 6 months before to the team as their experience is essential in a tournament like World Cup” he explained.

Stating that some of the changes made during the World Cup were too often, Aravinda de Silva pointed out that young players without experience had been put in the forefront which should not have been the case, as experience is needed to tackle a tournament like the World Cup.

Aravinda de Silva also shared that former cricketer and Sri Lanka cricket team consultant Mahela Jayawardena should have spent more time with the team, as he is an individual with vast knowledge and experience in cricket.

Aravinda de Silva said he is of the view that the time spent with the team by Mahela Jayawardena was insufficient and he should have stayed more with the team to guide them.
