The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka today dismissed the Fundamental Rights (FR) petition filed by Attorney-at-Law Aruna Laksiri seeking to withhold the Presidential Election.

The petition was dismissed after being taken up for consideration by the three-judge Supreme Court bench consisting of Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, and Justices Arjuna Obeysekera and Priyantha Fernando.

Issuing its judgement, the court deemed that the petition lacked merit and imposed a Rs.500,000 cost on the petitioner.

Last week, an FR petition was filed by Attorney-at-Law Aruna Laksiri seeking an order to withhold the Presidential Election.

In his petition, Attorney-at-Law Aruna Laksiri requests to withhold the Presidential Election as the 19th Amendment to the Constitution has yet to be properly passed in Parliament.

The lawyer has further sought a referendum to properly pass the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, pointing out that holding an election at this juncture was a violation of the Constitution of Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, the Opposition, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) also filed an intervening petition requesting that the FR petition filed by Attorney-at-Law Aruna Laksiri, be dismissed.

The intervening petition was filed before the Supreme Court by SJB MP Harshana Rajakaruna today. (Newswire)
