Wattegama Police have rescued a girl, believed to be around four years old, who had been inhumanely assaulted and left abandoned in a deserted area along the Yatirawana road on Thursday (13).

The discovery was made following a tip received through the police emergency hotline. A team from the Wattegama Police rushed to the scene and took the child into custody.

Investigators suspect that the girl was left at the location around 7 am after being transported there in a three‑wheeler. CCTV footage is being examined to trace the vehicle believed to have brought her.

Police said the child is unable to provide any information about her family or place of residence. She has since been admitted to the Kandy National Hospital for medical care.

Further investigations into the incident are being carried out by the Wattegama Police. (Newswire)

The Ministry of Labour has directed the Labour Department to conduct an urgent inquiry into a popular Kottu restaurant chain that has recently drawn public controversy over the assault of an employee. 

According to a ministry statement, Deputy Labour Minister Mahinda Jayasinghe has instructed officials to investigate allegations that employees were subjected to verbal and physical harassment by the individual claiming ownership of the chain.

The probe will also examine whether staff benefits and contributions to provident funds have been properly paid in line with labour laws. The chain, which operates 12 branches across the island, is expected to undergo collective inspections by labour officers.

Reports indicate that some outlets were closed in recent months. The Deputy Minister has asked officials to verify whether workers received legally due gratuities and other payments at the time of closure.

Labour officers are also tasked with recording employees’ views on workplace issues and industrial disputes.

The Deputy Minister has ordered that a comprehensive report covering all these matters be submitted to him by July 7. (Newswire)

Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the assault on an Air Force officer near an ATM in Wadduwa, an incident that drew widespread attention on social media.

Police have arrested five suspects aged 16 and 17 in connection with the assault of a youth near a Dansala in Malabe town on Poson Poya Day (29).

The arrests were made yesterday following a complaint lodged with the Malabe Police regarding a video circulating on social media that showed the youth being attacked with helmets, kicked, and punched. 

The suspects, residents of Kotalawala, Pattiyawatte Road, were taken into custody the same day.

Preliminary investigations revealed the incident stemmed from a dispute in a queue at a rice Dansala.

The Police Media Unit said the suspect was arrested by the Maharagama Police today (30) and is scheduled to be produced before the Homagama Magistrate’s Court.

Two security officers attached to the Chilaw District General Hospital were injured last night (14) when three guards were attacked by two individuals attempting to forcibly enter the premises, it was reported.

According to Ada Derana, hospital officials said one of the suspects had arrived under the influence of alcohol with another person and tried to gain entry to visit a patient receiving residential treatment. 

When security staff intervened to prevent them, the assault took place. The injured officers are currently receiving treatment at the same hospital.

Sri Lanka Police has issued a clarification regarding false news circulating on social media and several websites, which alleged that a special investigation was underway against SI Prasanna of Mount Lavinia for giving electric shocks to a suspect in custody. 

Issuing a statement, The Police stated that no such investigation has been initiated and described the reports as fabricated.

The Police said, per a report from the Mount Lavinia Police, on Sunday (07), a team of officers including a Sub‑Inspector attached to the Badowita Police post arrested a resident of Badowita for possession of 10.150 grams of heroin.

The suspect was later referred to the Judicial Medical Officer at Kalubowila Teaching Hospital, where he claimed to have been assaulted by arresting officers. Following examination, the JMO admitted him for residential treatment under police protection.

On Monday (08), the Mount Lavinia Magistrate visited the hospital and conducted an inspection. During this process, the suspect stated to the Magistrate that he had not been assaulted by police officers. The Magistrate subsequently ordered that the suspect be detained for seven days to facilitate further investigations.

Several arrests have been made in connection with three separate assault incidents reported in estates in different parts of Sri Lanka, Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala told Parliament today (07).

Addressing Parliament, Minister Wijepala said on April 21, in the Neelagamam Division in Pelmadulla, 11 security officials had allegedly assaulted villagers during a dispute over an illegal construction. 

He said the security officers have been arrested and were produced in court, adding that the Police have taken necessary actions in this regard.   

Last night (06), at the Mokawatte Estate, the estate manager allegedly slapped his meals caretaker. He was arrested at 09.00 am today and is scheduled to be produced in court, he further revealed. 

Minister Wijepala went on to say that early this morning at 12.30 am at Delta Estate, Udupussellawa, Maskeliya, Nuwara Eliya, the deputy manager was arrested for allegedly assaulting a worker. 

The minister said that the arrested deputy estate manager too will be produced in court today.

“There is no attempt to brush away any such incidents. The law will be implemented equally to all,” Minister Wijepala stressed.

He made the remarks in response to questions raised by Opposition MPs Mano Ganesan and Jeevan Thondaman, who highlighted the continuous assaults on upcountry Tamils in various parts of Sri Lanka.

A Saudi national who is alleged to have assaulted and injured a flight attendant aboard a SriLankan Airlines aircraft has been sentenced to three months in prison after admitting guilt in court. 

However, Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama today (03) suspended the sentence for five years.

The suspect was charged by airport police with three counts, including assault causing injury and intimidation. In addition to the prison sentence, a fine of Rs. 10,000 was imposed.

Presenting details of the incident, the airport police informed the court that the assault occurred on October 26 aboard a SriLankan Airlines flight travelling from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to the Katunayake Airport.

Investigating officers further stated that the flight attendant had instructed all passengers to fasten their seatbelts as the aircraft was preparing to land, but the suspect had disregarded the instruction, engaged in a verbal altercation with the attendant, and proceeded to physically assault her.
