The Ministry of Health has called on mothers to continue breastfeeding infants up to six months of age, even during the ongoing disaster situation, stressing that breast milk remains the safest and most complete form of nutrition.

In a statement, the ministry reiterated that infants under six months should be given only breast milk — not even water — as it provides all the necessary nutrients, hydration, and immune protection critical for survival and health, particularly during emergencies.

“For children under six months, breast milk is a complete meal,” the ministry said, noting that after six months, breastfeeding should continue alongside appropriate complementary foods.

Health officials raised concern over the promotion and distribution of infant formula and feeding bottles in flood-affected areas, warning that such practices pose health risks.

Dr. Chandima Siritunga of the Family Health Bureau said, “Promoting baby formula is harmful to the children of the entire country,” urging donors to avoid distributing formula and instead support breastfeeding mothers.

Recommended donations include breastfeeding-friendly clothing, easy chairs for mothers, blankets, and warm baby clothing such as hats and socks to help mothers continue feeding safely and comfortably. (Newswire)
