The government states that renovation work at the Bambalapitiya Railway Station has reached its final stage.

The project is being implemented under the supervision of the Ministry of Transport and Urban Development and operates as a public–private partnership, with funding provided through financial contributions from the local community.

Renovations have covered the main station, sanitary facilities, roofing, platforms, special parapet walls, and the construction of a flyover above Marine Drive, at a total cost of Rs. 55 million. (Newswire)

The Ministry of Transport says renovation work at the Bambalapitiya Railway Station is continuing without interruption under the “Dream Destination” project, carried out as part of the Clean Sri Lanka National Programme.

The project is being implemented with the supervision of the Ministry of Transport and Urban Development and operates under a public–private partnership model, while funding comes from financial contributions made by the local community.

The Transport Ministry said that Rs. 55 million has already been spent on the renovation work. 

The Ministry added that all upgrades are expected to be completed by August this year. (Newswire)

A nightclub in Bambalapitiya was raided by the Colombo South Divisional Criminal Investigation Bureau on the night of October 6, 2025, Vap Poya Day, for allegedly selling alcohol in violation of the ban on religious holidays.

Police said the raid took place around 9:40 p.m. following information that alcohol was being sold at the premises.

The manager on duty was arrested for the sale and possession of alcohol without a valid license, and for the possession of foreign cigarettes.

Investigations revealed that the establishment is operated by a foreign national.

Three suspects have been arrested in Bambalapitiya for financially defrauding the public, promising jobs in Canada. 

According to the Police, the suspects were arrested with a fake visa sticker by officials from the Bambalapitiya Police Station, yesterday (25). 

The arrested suspects are a 69-year-old man from Borella, and two women aged 26 and 68, from the Gonagangaara and Borella areas.

Police investigations have found that one female suspect had defrauded Rs. 3,831,000 and Rs. 3,436,000, promising to send people to Canada.

The Bambalapitiya Police have arrested six suspects for stealing over Rs. 1 million in cash by threatening and assaulting an individual, who had been lured under the guise of operating a spa.

The suspects had assaulted the victim and threatened him with a knife forcing him to make an online transfer of Rs. 01 million, while they had also stolen Rs. 15,000 that was inside the victim’s wallet.

Based on a complaint filed with the Bambalapitiya Police on the robbery which took place last Friday, an investigation had been launched leading to the arrest of a couple.

The couple, a man aged 44 years and a woman aged 54 years, had been arrested along with the three-wheeler used to carry out the crime.

Interrogation of the suspect had led to the arrest of four more suspects, aged between 19 to 23 years, and residents of the Ratmalana and Mount Lavinia areas.

The Bambalapitiya Police seized 20 motorcycles and arrested several riders for reckless riding and racing on Duplication Road and Galle Road in Bambalapitiya on Saturday (May 04). 

The Police seized the vehicles and arrested the riders during a special raid conducted after receiving complaints from the public about the motorcyclists. 

Video footage shows some motorcyclists riding in the opposite direction of the one-way road inconveniencing oncoming vehicles and other motorcyclists were seen racing and engaging in stunts such as one-wheeling.

The riders and motorcycles were taken into custody and brought to the Bambalapitiya Police Station during which it was found that the motorcycles had been modified.

A 24-year-old woman has been arrested for operating a fraudulent educational institute in Bambalapitiya offering courses required for overseas employment.

The Police stated that the woman was arrested following a raid conducted on the ‘Evolve College of Education’ in Lauries’ Road, Bambalapitiya on November 27.

Investigations have revealed that the suspect, a resident of Giriulla, had provided fake diplomas and higher diplomas required for overseas employment.

The woman had attracted students from various parts of the country, conducted online classes, and provided fake diplomas following the conclusion of the course.

Despite conducting the institution without following proper local or international standards, the suspect had charged between Rs. 100,000 to Rs. 445,000 for the degrees. 

The Police said a total of 43 complaints have been received against the suspect and the institution, while over 1000 people are reported to have gotten caught in the scam.

The contract for the reconstruction of the pedestrian bridges across Marine Drive to access the Bambalapitiya and Wellawatta railway stations has been awarded to the State Development and Design Statutory Corporation.

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the awarding of the contract to the company subject to the condition of completion within a period of six months.

The government said the need for the construction of temporary steps and immediate reconstruction of the pedestrian bridges has been identified considering the precarious condition of the pedestrian bridges.

Identifying the reconstruction of the pedestrian bridges as an urgent and essential construction, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the proposal presented by the Minister of Transport and Highways in this regard.

Plans are in motion to erect a temporary accessway at the Bambalapitiya railway station.

According to the President’s Media Division (PMD), the measures have been taken in this regard on the directives of President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The temporary accessway at the Bambalapitiya railway station is expected to be constructed within 10 days of removing the current flyover.

The President has also instructed for a new bridge to be constructed within 5 months. 

The PMD added that the State Quantity & Construction Corporation has been entrusted with the project, under the oversight of the Road Development Authority (RDA).

An urgent report has been sought from the Department of Excise regarding the shooting incident involving a group of Excise officers in the Bambalapitiya area yesterday.

Taking to Twitter, State Minister of Finance Ranjith Siyambalapitiya that the Commissioner General of Excise has been instructed to provide a report on the incident.

Four officials of the Department of Excise, including an Inspector were arrested by the Police after they had opened fire at a car near Castle Lane on Marine Drive in Bambalapitiya yesterday.

At the time, Spokesperson for the Excise Department, Kapila Kumarasinghe stated that the excise officials had opened fire as part of an operation to apprehend suspects involved in drug trafficking.

“The Excise officials arrested a suspect during a raid in Bambalapitiya while in possession of 150g of heroin. During the incident, another suspect attempted to flee the scene in a car prompting the officials to open fire at the vehicle,” he added. 

Meanwhile, the Police stated that the excise officials in civil attire had engaged in a sting operation during which they had sought to apprehend drug traffickers by purchasing drugs from them.

The Police added that however, the Excise officers were found to be without money at the time of their arrest.
