Prison authorities have seized 29 mobile phones during a special operation carried out at the Boossa High-Security Prison today, officials said.

According to the Prison Spokesperson, the devices were recovered from several inmates, including leading underworld figures ‘Dematagoda Chaminda’, ‘Wele Suda’, and ‘Midigama Ruwan.’

In addition to the mobile phones, prison officials also discovered 30 SIM cards and 35 chargers hidden inside cells during the search.

Authorities have launched an internal investigation to determine how the contraband items were smuggled into the high-security facility. 

The raid was conducted as part of ongoing efforts to curb organized crime operations allegedly being coordinated from within prisons. (Newswire)

The gunman wanted in the murder of a former Superintendent of the Boossa Prison has been arrested at the Katunayake Airport, while attempting to flee Sri Lanka.

The suspect was arrested by officials from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) today while attempting to flee to Thailand using a forged passport.

CID officers had installed a facial recognition system at the departure terminal of the Katunayake Airport for his arrest.

The arrested suspect is a 31-year-old resident of Ambalangoda.

Police investigations have revealed that the suspect was the main shooter of the leader of the southern organized crime gang, Karandeniya Sudda.

According to the Police, he is a suspect wanted for numerous murders and financial fraud in the Galle and Ambalangoda police areas.

The arrested suspect was taken into custody by a group of officers, including the OIC of the Ambalangoda Police, and has been taken to the Police Station for further investigations. (Newswire)

An inmate at the Boossa Prison in Galle has been reported dead after being allegedly attacked with a sharp object, the Department of Prisons said. 

The inmate who was in remand custody is reported to have been attacked by a fellow inmate.

According to Ada Derana, the 46-year-old victim is reported to have died due to injuries sustained in 11 places on the body, by a blunt object.

Investigations have been launched into the incident, with the authorities suspecting whether a recent raid at the prison or a drug-related conflict was linked to the death. (Newswire)

The Jailor in charge of underworld kingpin ‘Ganemulla Sanjeewa’s security on the day of his killing at a Colombo courthouse, has been remanded. 

The Colombo Magistrate’s Court today remanded the Jailor until 21 March 2025.

The man, who is a jailor of the Boossa Prison in Galle, was arrested by the Colombo Crimes Division.  

Underworld Kingpin ‘Ganemulla Sanjeewa’ was killed inside a Colombo courthouse in February by an individual disguised as a lawyer. 

Several suspects, including the gunman, have been arrested in connection to the murder, while a female suspect who had aided the shooting is yet to be arrested. (Newswire)
