The British High Commission in Sri Lanka has announced that the applications for the prestigious Chevening Scholarships to study in the United Kingdom (UK) will close on 7 October 2025 at 12:00 UTC.

Before applying, candidates are strongly encouraged to review the guidance at chevening.org/guidance and assess their readiness to submit a competitive application.

Key updates have been made to the eligibility criteria, notably, only work experience gained after the date of graduation will be counted for the two-year (equivalent to 2800 hours) work experience requirement.

The application window is shortened to 02 months, and the application questions have been changed to reflect how candidates’ choice of course and university connects to key global priority areas.

The Chevening Scholarship programme offers fully funded one-year master’s degrees at UK universities to individuals who are ready to lead positive change in their home countries and around the world.

For more than 40 years, Chevening has attracted hundreds of thousands of applications globally. In Sri Lanka, Chevening alumni form a vibrant, four-decade-strong community of changemakers from diverse backgrounds and professions. Many have gone on to become influential leaders in their fields.

Successful applicants are individuals who can compellingly demonstrate exceptional leadership, influence, and networking skills, supported by clear, evidence-based examples.

Emma Hennessey, Head of The Scholarships Unit at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), said: “Chevening’s highly competitive selection process ensures that those chosen to become Chevening Scholars or Fellows represent the brightest and most driven individuals from around the world.

“Chevening Alumni use their world-class education, global networks, and confidence gained in the UK to create meaningful, lasting change when they return home, whether by tackling global challenges or making a tangible impact in their own communities.

“If you can clearly demonstrate the skills needed to join them – outstanding leadership, influence, and networking skills – I strongly encourage you to apply. If you’re not quite there yet, I encourage you to take the time to build the experience that will make your application competitive.

“I’m continually inspired by the dedication and drive of the Chevening community, and I look forward to seeing what the next generation of leaders will bring.” Prospective candidates can apply via chevening.org/apply.

Since its launch in 1983, more than 60,000 professionals from diverse backgrounds have advanced their careers through Chevening, underscoring the UK’s commitment to developing the leaders of tomorrow. Your story could be the next to inspire others. (Newswire)

The British High Commission and the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) have introduced a Counter-Terrorism Awareness eLearning Platform aimed at enhancing security awareness and resilience within Sri Lanka’s tourism industry.

Modelled after the UK’s successful Action Counters Terrorism (ACT) initiative, this online course equips tourism professionals with the skills to identify and address potential threats, ensuring a safer environment for visitors and locals.

Key Features of the eLearning Platform are;

  • Multilingual Access: Available in Sinhala and Tamil for broad accessibility.
  • Comprehensive Content: Covers recognizing suspicious behaviour, identifying vulnerabilities, and managing potential threats.
  • Certification: Participants will earn certificates jointly issued by SLTDA and the British High Commission upon completion.
  • Flexible Learning: A 60-90-minute online course accessible anytime.
  • Open to All: Designed for everyone in the tourism sector, from hoteliers to tour operators.

Building on previous counter-terrorism training that has already reached over 3,000 industry stakeholders in the past three years, this eLearning platform is part of an ongoing effort to reinforce safety and bolster Sri Lanka’s reputation as a secure and welcoming destination.

Tourism professionals are encouraged to enrol to better prepare their teams for potential security challenges and improve overall safety standards. For more information or to register, visit www.ctatraining.lk or contact the Standards and Quality Assurance Division of the SLTDA.

Deputy Minister of Tourism Prof. Ruwan Ranasinghe and Acting British High Commissioner for Sri Lanka, Lisa Whanstall attended the launch event held yesterday. Key stakeholders from the tourism sector, emergency services, and government agencies participated.

Stressing the importance of safety as Sri Lanka’s tourism industry continues to grow, Prof. Ruwan Ranasinghe said; “Tourism is vital to our economy, and a secure environment is essential for both visitors and locals. This programme is a crucial step towards preparing our industry for future challenges.”

Also commenting, Acting British High Commissioner Lisa Whanstall said: “We are proud to lend UK expertise to enhance Sri Lanka’s tourism capacity. This training will help improve security practices in the tourism industry, building confidence in security awareness.  We know this is important to local communities and travellers. We hope to see British visitor numbers continue to rise in the years ahead.”

In a statement, emphasizing the organisation’s commitment to safety, SLTDA Chairman Buddhika Hewawasam said; “As we see a re-growth in Sri Lanka’s tourism industry, visitor and staff safety remain top priorities. This eLearning course will empower our professionals to detect and respond to security threats, fostering greater confidence in the capacity of our industry.” (Newswire)
