Two men have been arrested by the Wattala Police for allegedly behaving in a disorderly manner and verbally abusing a female Buddhist monk near the Rathnawali Temple in Kerawalapitiya, Wattala.

Police said the suspects, aged 58 and 67, are residents of Wattala. 

The incident, which occurred on Sunday night (2), was captured on video and has since gone viral on social media.

Both suspects are to be produced before the Welisara Magistrate’s Court today (3). (Newswire)

A Buddhist monk has been shot dead at a temple in the Gampaha District, the Police said. 

According to the Police, the deceased monk has been identified as 45-year-old Venerable Kalapaluwawe Dhammarathana Thera.

The monk is reported to have been killed in a shooting at the Malwathuhiripitiya Kahatana Temple in the Gampaha District. (NewsWire)

Segments of the Buddhist Sangha held a protest march against the government’s decision on the full implementation of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution.

A Sangha convention took place at the Perakumba Pirivena in Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte today (8), prior to the commencement of the protest march.

The protest march is organized by the Bhikku Collective representing the three main Buddhist Sects.

The Police obstructed the protest march from proceeding after it had reached the Polduwa Junction on Parliament Road. (NewsWire)
