A cache of bullets was discovered within the premises designated for the upcoming international cricket stadium in Jaffna.

According to the Virakesari newspaper, construction work for the stadium in the Mandaitivu area is currently underway. 

During site clearing operations on Saturday (20 Sept), a quantity of R-56 type bullets was found inside a pipe.

Following this discovery, the Point Pedro Police were notified. They subsequently obtained permission from the Point Pedro Magistrate’s Court to recover the bullets.

According to the Thinakaran newspaper, the bullets discovered within the premises designated for the Jaffna International Sports Stadium were recovered yesterday (22).

Based on the Point Pedro Magistrate’s Court’s approval, the recovery operation was carried out yesterday, and the bullets were successfully unearthed. (Newswire)

The Athurugiriya Police have recovered 50 rounds of live ammunition used for T-56 firearms and a sharp weapon based on information retrieved from a detained suspect. 

The 25-year-old suspect had been arrested for the possession of 11.1 grams of ICE on 12 April. 

After interrogating the suspect under a detention order, the Police were able to recover the live ammunition.

The Athurugiriya Police is conducting further investigations. (Newswire)

The daughter-in-law of a former member of the North-Central Provincial Council has been remanded for the possession of 28 bullets, it was reported.

The 44-year-old woman was remanded until today for being in possession of live ammunition at her residence in Gallenbindunuwewa.

The woman’s 11-year-old son was found to have brought one bullet, belonging to a T-56 firearm, to school. A teacher who had seen the child with the bullet had informed the school principal in this regard.

The school principal had then informed the Gallenbindunuwewa Police, who had taken the child along to inspect his house.

During the inspection, they found 17 T-56 bullets, 10 bullets for a 9mm pistol, and one bullet for a revolver which had been placed inside a plastic bag being used to keep money inside a cupboard.

The child’s mother had been taken to the Police station to record a statement, after which she was arrested and remanded last week.

The Gallenbindunuwewa Police is conducting further investigations into the incident. (Newswire)
