The new luxury airport bus service that was launched connecting the Katunayake Airport to key destinations in Colombo has been temporarily suspended with effect from August 19.

The new luxury airport bus service was launched last week (Aug 15) but faced opposition, especially from the Airport-Fort Bus Employees Union, which had also staged a protest.

The Airport-Fort Bus Employees Union had also conveyed their objections to the Ministry of Transport and Highways and the National Election Commission.

Several Taxi Associations had also extended their support for the protest by the Airport-Fort Bus Employees Union.

Taking into consideration the objections, measures were taken to suspend the luxury airport bus service just four days after it was launched.

However, the Airport-Fort Bus Employees Union has announced it has decided to operate 10 of its non-operational buses from the Katunayake Airport to Fort Railway Station and Makumbura Multimodal Transport Centre.

The protest comes after the new luxury airport bus service was launched connecting the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake with Port City, Fort Railway Station, Colombo Main Bus Stop and the Makumbura Multimodal Transport Centre.

The luxury bus service was to operate from the Katunayake Airport and ply along the Colombo – Katunayake Highway without any stops, to the destinations in Colombo, while 10 buses had been allocated for the bus service costing Rs. 3000 per passenger for a one-way journey. (Newswire)
