A female pedestrian has died after being struck by a passenger transport bus near the private bus stand at Bastian Mawatha, Pettah, last evening.

According to the Police, the woman who had sustained injuries in the accident later died after being admitted to the Colombo National Hospital.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been confirmed, but investigations so far have revealed that she was a beggar woman.

The bus driver has been taken into custody, and further investigations are being carried out by the Pettah Police. (Newswire)

The renovation of the Colombo Central Bus Stand in Pettah commenced this morning under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

It is reported that this marks the first major upgrade to the facility since its construction in 1964.

The Pettah Central bus stand is being renovated under the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ national programme at an estimated cost of Rs. 425 million.

The work will be conducted with the direct labour contribution of the Sri Lanka Air Force and the support and cooperation of the Colombo Municipal Council, Lanka Electricity Board, National Water Supply and Drainage Board, Road Development Authority, Urban Development Authority, and other institutions. Cabinet approval has been granted for the development of the Pettah Central bus stand under the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ national program. 

According to the government, the access roads, bus yards, passenger stands, driver and conductor restrooms, administrative buildings, and sanitation and drainage systems of the Pettah Central Bus Stand are in a dilapidated condition due to a lack of repairs and maintenance. 

Passengers, drivers, conductors, and operational staff who use the Pettah Central bus stand have encountered immense difficulties as a result.

Therefore, the renovation and development of the Pettah Central Bus Stand have been identified as essential requirements, at an estimated cost of Rs. 425 million.

Accordingly, the Cabinet of Ministers has approved the proposal presented by the Minister of Transport to renovate and develop the Pettah Central bus stand by utilizing the provisions allocated for “Clean Sri Lanka”.

The work will be conducted with the direct labour contribution of the Air Force and the support and cooperation of the Colombo Municipal Council, Lanka Electricity Board, National Water Supply and Drainage Board, Road Development Authority, Urban Development Authority, and other institutions.
