Several Tamil political parties and civil organizations in Jaffna have reached an agreement to field a common Tamil candidate for the upcoming Presidential Election, it was reported. 

The agreement has been reached between Tamil People’s Alliance led by MP C.V. Wigneswaran, Tamil Eelam Liberation Organization (TELO) led by MP Selvam Adaikkalanathan, People’s Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE) led by MP Dharmalingam Siddharthan, Tamil National Party led by N. Sri Kantha, and Eelam People’s Revolutionary Liberation Front (EPRLF) led by Suresh Premachandran.

The said political parties and Tamil People’s General Assembly, comprising several Tamil civil organizations, signed the agreement in Jaffna today. 

It is reported that, however, the Illankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi (ITAK) comprising MP M.A. Sumanthiran and the Tamil National People’s Front (TNPF) comprising MP Gajendra Kumar Ponnambalam were notably absent from the occasion. (Newswire)

President Ranil Wickremesinghe and former Northern Province Chief Minister C.V Wigneswaran have engaged in a discussion during the President’s visit to Jaffna on Saturday (May 25).

According to media reports, the discussion had taken place at Parliamentarian C.V Wigneswaran’s residence in Nallur. 

Revealing details of the meeting, MP Wigneswaran said the President had made a courtesy call on him and that it was not for any political purpose. 

He further said that during the meeting, the President had briefed him on the measures being taken to improve Sri Lanka’s economy and about the anticipated Presidential Election.

The discussions had also focussed on the ongoing development in the Northern Province and measures being taken to address the concerns of the people of the North. (Newswire)
