Campaigning activities of candidates contesting the 2024 General Elections will conclude at 12.00 midnight today.

According to the National Election Commission, a 48-hour silent period will commence, thereafter.

All news outlets related to print, broadcast, and social media have been instructed to follow the guidelines issued on election campaign reporting during the silent period.

News entities are permitted to publish election campaigning-related news tomorrow (12 Nov), as per the guidelines, but are required to refrain from publishing any such news on 13 and 14 November. 

The 2024 General Election is scheduled to be held on Thursday, 14 November. (Newswire)

The National Election Commission has requested candidates contesting the 2024 Presidential Election to refrain from using plastic and polythene during their campaigning activities.

The Election Commission said the request has been made considering a request made by the Secretary to the Ministry of Environment, and the ban introduced in September 2017.

The National Election Commission made the announcement following the acceptance of nominations by Presidential candidates today. 

A total of 39 candidates handed in their nominations to contest the Presidential Election scheduled for September 21 this year. (Newswire)
