A revenue inspector contesting for the Akmeemana Pradeshiya Sabha in the upcoming Local Government Election has been arrested for soliciting a bribe of Rs. 25,000.

According to the Bribery Commission, the suspect had solicited the bribe in exchange for providing a business licence for this year for a hotel in Galle.

He was arrested while accepting the bribe inside a room of the said hotel yesterday. (Newswire)

The National Election Commission has introduced a new digital service for voters to obtain details about candidates contesting the upcoming Local Government Elections. 

Accordingly, voters can visit the election commission website, https://eservices.elections.gov.lk or access details through a QR code.

Those visiting the website have been advised to click on the ‘For Citizens’ tab at the top of the site and then navigate to the ‘Know Your Candidate’ (KYC) section at the bottom of the page. 

The portal will provide details of candidates, party or independent group, and the local council.

Cash deposits have been placed for a total of 17 candidates so far to contest the 2024 Presidential Elections.

Three candidates had placed bonds at the National Election Commission today to contest the elections.

SJB Chairman Field Marshall Sarath Fonseka and former JVP MP Siripala Amarasinghe are among those on behalf of whom cash deposits were made today. 

The Presidential polls are scheduled for September 21, while Nominations will be accepted on August 15. (Newswire)
