The Castle Street Hospital for Women has confirmed the birth of conjoined twin girls at the hospital earlier this week (10), it was reported. 

According to the Hospital Director, Dr. Ajith Danthanarayana, the mother, a 29-year-old woman from Pannala, delivered the twins via Caesarean section. 

One baby weighed 2.2 kg, and together the twins weighed 4.4 kg, with both reported to be in stable health.

The twins are joined at the abdomen, and a separation surgery is scheduled to take place at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children in approximately three months.

Following their discharge, the twins will be admitted to Lady Ridgeway Hospital after the three-month recovery period for further evaluation and surgical preparation.

Dr. Danthanarayana noted that while twin births are not uncommon at the hospital, this is the first conjoined twin birth recorded in recent history at Castle Street. (Newswire)

The Castle Street Hospital for Women in Colombo is not conducting an egg donation program, Dr. Ajith Dantanarayana, Director of the hospital said.

He confirmed that only a sperm donation program is currently in operation. 

Since its recent launch, the sperm bank has registered more than 150 male donors. According to Dr. Dantanarayana, ten women have conceived through the program, and over 200 others are receiving support.

He refuted media reports claiming an egg donation program had been initiated, stating that no such program exists at the hospital.

Dr. Dantanarayana said the sperm donation initiative is intended to support couples experiencing infertility by offering a medically supervised path to parenthood. (Newswire)

The Castle Street Hospital for Women in Colombo has introduced a new programme to allow fathers to be present in the delivery room during childbirth, it was reported. 

According to the state newspaper, Dinamina, the Director of the Castle Street Hospital for Women Dr.Ajith Danthanarayana said this is the first government hospital to launch such a program.

Dr. Danthanarayana further said that separate rooms have been prepared for each mother in the maternity ward.

“This program which allows husbands to be with their wives during childbirth, will result in the woman being able to give birth to the child in a good state of mind, while it will also strengthen the relationship between the couple as well as between the parents and child,” he said. (Newswire)

One infant among the recently born sextuplets has passed away, the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children in Colombo reported.

Director of the Hospital, Dr. G. Wijesuriya told the media that the infant had died due to bleeding in the lungs.

The sextuplets were born to a woman from Ragama on Sunday night (Oct 15) at the Castle Street Hospital in Colombo.

Dr. Wijesuriya said one infant was transferred to the Lady Ridgeway Hospital on the same day. 

“The child weighed around 620 grams and was kept on life support at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital. Despite great attempts to provide treatment by the hospital staff, the child passed away on Wednesday,” he said.

Stating that a healthy newborn usually weighs over 2 kilos, Dr. Wijesuriya said the said child was only around 620 grams and that such infants face great risk and have a low survival rate. (NewsWire)

The Castle Street Hospital in Colombo has announced the birth of sextuplets today.

Hospital sources said a woman from Ragama has given birth to the six babies.

According to media reports, the woman had birthed six boys this morning, while the mother and children are in good health. 

The last sextuplet birth to be reported in Sri Lanka was in October 2021. Three boys and three girls were born during the birth. (NewsWire)
