Two newly established Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratories and the renovated Cardiology Day Case Unit at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka will be officially opened for patient care services tomorrow (July 2).

According to the Ministry of Health, the new and renovated facilities will be declared open at 3.00 pm tomorrow under the patronage of Minister of Health Nalinda Jayatissa.

The facilities form part of a wider programme to enhance diagnostic and treatment services in the country’s health system, implemented under Dr. Jayatissa’s guidance. 

The Cath Lab complex and upgraded day case unit have been established through the Health System Enhancement Project funded by the Asian Development Bank.

This week marks a significant expansion of cardiac care capacity, with four state‑of‑the‑art Cath Labs being added to the government hospital network. 

The Jaffna Teaching Hospital unit was opened on June 27, while the Colombo South Teaching Hospital, Kalubowila, began patient services on June 30.

Equipped with artificial intelligence‑based real‑time imaging technology, the new catheterisation systems enable high‑quality imaging while reducing radiation exposure during fluoroscopy procedures.

The Kalubowila Teaching Hospital today (30) unveiled a newly established Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory (Cath Lab), Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA Unit), and Lithotripsy Unit under a Rs. 555 million investment, marking another milestone in Sri Lanka’s drive to modernize its free healthcare system with advanced technology.

Speaking at the opening, Minister of Health Nalinda Jayatissa said that the government hospital network will expand its Cath Lab capacity to 26 units by the end of this year. 

Currently, 10 units are in operation, with 16 more to be added across major hospitals nationwide. Four new Cath Labs are expected to be commissioned within this week, aimed at reducing waiting lists and providing timely treatment.

The Minister noted that Rs. 3,103 million will be spent to increase Cath Lab facilities, with funding from the Treasury, the Asian Development Bank, and the JICA concessionary loan project. 

Units are planned for Colombo, Kandy, and Galle national hospitals, as well as Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Badulla, Ratnapura, Anuradhapura, Kurunegala, and Jaffna.

Highlighting demographic pressures, Dr. Jayatissa pointed out that Colombo and Gampaha districts together house 4.8 million people, creating a relative shortage of tertiary‑level hospitals compared to demand.

The Colombo South Teaching Hospital in Kalubowila will unveil its newly established cardiac catheterisation laboratory alongside several advanced patient care units on Tuesday (June 30). 

The facilities, launched under the guidance of Minister of Health Nalinda Jayatissa, mark a significant step in strengthening diagnostic and treatment services for heart and vascular diseases nationwide.

According to the Ministry of Health, Hospital Director Dr. Sagari Kiriwandeniya said the following facilities at the South Colombo Teaching Hospital would be opened for public use: 

•         Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory, or Cath Lab
•         Digital Subtraction Angiography, or DSA Unit 
•         Lithotripsy Unit, used to break down kidney and urinary tract stones 

The opening marks another important step in strengthening treatment services for heart and vascular diseases in Sri Lanka. Four modern cath labs are being added to the government hospital system this week. The cath lab at the Teaching Hospital, Jaffna, was opened for public use on June 27. 

The Ministry of Health has also planned to add two cath labs at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka in Colombo and the new cath lab at the South Colombo Teaching Hospital, Kalubowila, to patient care services this week. 

These advanced catheterisation systems are equipped with artificial intelligence-based real-time imaging technology. They also enable high-quality imaging while significantly reducing radiation exposure during fluoroscopy procedures. 

The Ministry said the establishment of these key diagnostic and treatment units, including cardiac catheterisation laboratories, would help reduce waiting lists in the hospital system.

Sri Lanka’s health sector is set for a major upgrade in cardiac care, with 16 state‑of‑the‑art cardiac catheterization laboratories (Cath labs) to be installed in leading hospitals islandwide this year under the instructions of Health Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Health, the new facilities will be established at Colombo, Kandy, and Galle National Hospitals, as well as teaching hospitals in Batticaloa, Ratnapura, Badulla, Jaffna, Kalubowila, Anuradhapura, Kurunegala, and at the Trincomalee District General Hospital.

According to the Ministry, Rs. 715 million has been allocated for four machines at Batticaloa, Ratnapura, Badulla, and Galle National Hospital.

Under the Asian Development Bank’s Health System Improvement Project, Rs. 1,188 million will fund three machines at Colombo National Hospital and one each at Kandy, Jaffna, and Kalubowila. 

In addition, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) assistance will provide Rs.1,200 million for six machines, including two at Anuradhapura and one each at Kurunegala, Badulla, Kandy, and Trincomalee.

In total, Rs. 3,103 million will be spent on the project. With the new installations, the number of Cath labs in the government hospital system will rise to 26.

Currently, Cath labs are operational at Colombo, Kandy, and Galle National Hospitals, as well as at Jaffna, Kurunegala, Ragama, Kalutara, Anuradhapura, Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital, Sirimavo Bandaranaike Children’s Hospital in Peradeniya, and Polonnaruwa District General Hospital.

The Health Ministry states the expansion will double annual treatment capacity, reduce waiting lists, and ensure 24‑hour services for heart attack patients.
