Investigations into the suspicious death of former SriLankan Airlines Chief Executive Officer Kapila Chandrasena have been handed over to the Colombo Crimes Division, it was reported.

According to the Divaina newspaper, a five‑member panel of specialist doctors led by Colombo Chief Judicial Medical Officer Dr. Sriyantha Amarathna conducted the post‑mortem on May 9.

Samples of blood, urine, tissue, organs, and hair were sent to the Government Analyst for chemical testing to determine the exact cause of death. Police said the medical board will issue its findings once the full report is available.

Chandrasena, who had been remanded for nearly two months over alleged fraud in aircraft purchases, was released on bail last week. Controversy soon arose when it was revealed that the guarantors who posted bail were paid individuals with no connection to him. Keselwatta Police arrested two of them, who admitted they had acted as guarantors for money. On May 7, the Bribery Commission petitioned the court to cancel Chandrasena’s bail, citing violations of bail conditions, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

The former airline chief was later found dead in a room at the Colpetty residence of ex‑cricketer Aravinda de Silva. Police said he had been staying there due to family ties through his wife. Though the death appeared to be by hanging, investigators suspected foul play and ordered a wider probe. Statements were recorded from de Silva, his wife, and several others present at the house. Chandrasena’s mobile phone was also seized for analysis of recent calls.

Police Media Spokesman ASP F.U. Wootler said that the samples were sent to the Government Analyst to establish the precise cause of death. The Police stated that the investigation will continue until all circumstances surrounding Chandrasena’s death are clarified. (Newswire)

Former Member of Parliament Patali Champika Ranawaka was summoned before the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) yesterday to provide a statement regarding an ongoing investigation.

Speaking to the media, Ranawaka said that a Police B report submitted to court points to a conspiracy against the government.

“We have consistently raised issues about this government backed by proper, scientific evidence. The matter of the 323 containers was highlighted based on a report by the Additional Secretary of the subject ministry. When a power outage was blamed on a monkey, we presented scientific evidence showing it was caused by a trip failure linked to the Victoria Dam. We also exposed the lack of preparedness for Cyclone Ditwah, despite prior warnings, again based on evidence. All these matters were raised with scientific proof,” he stated.

On the issue of alleged substandard coal imports, Ranawaka stressed that this too was raised with sufficient evidence, urging authorities to respond with facts rather than investigations and character assassinations.

He added that they intend to present their views on the coal imports at the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) tomorrow (18).

Ranawaka further warned that if the government moves to increase electricity tariffs, they will launch protests against such a decision. (Newswire)

The Hulftsdorp Magistrate’s Court has ordered that the underworld figure ‘Tinker’ be detained for 24 hours from 02 October 2025 to 03rd October 2025, based on a request made by the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD).

Sri Lankan national Sridharan Niranjan, also known as ‘Tinker’, was deported from Dubai and brought to Sri Lanka yesterday (01), after which he was handed over to the CCD for further investigations.

Interrogations of the suspect had revealed that he was involved in the shooting incident in Gnanarathana Mawatha, Peliyagoda, in August 2025, in which one person was killed and another was injured.

Based on the revelation, the CCD decided that 24 hours was insufficient to interrogate the suspect and sought a court order to extend his detention until 03rd October, for another 24 hours.

Based on the court order issued enabling the detention, the suspect is to remain in the custody of the CCD until 03rd October, for further interrogations. (Newswire)

Retired SSP Shani Abeysekara has filed a case at the Colombo District Court seeking compensation of Rs. 1 billion from four senior police officers for his wrongful arrest and prosecution.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) C.D. Wickramaratne, Senior Deputy Inspector General (SDIG) in charge of the Western Province Deshabandu Tennakoon, IP Jagath Nishantha and ASP Neville Silva from the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD), and the Attorney General have been cited as respondents in the case.

Through the case, Abeysekara has accused the officers of the CCD of allegedly having framed him by fabricating evidence related to the case filed in connection to the murder of the late businessman Mohamed Shyam.

Claiming that the investigation in this regard had been conducted under the instructions of the IGP and SDIG Tennakoon, Abeysekara alleged that the two officers from the CDD had been threatened to make false statements against him.

Stating that based on the statements he had been arrested and remanded after being produced before the Gampaha Court, Abeysekara said he had been released on the orders of the Attorney General months later.

Abeysekara pointed out that he has sought compensation from the four Police officers for misusing the court process and causing grievances to him.

Earlier, Abeysekara had also sent a letter of demand to the four senior police officers, alleging that the respondents had victimized him and abused the court process.

Shani Abeysekara was arrested in July 2020 and was charged under the Offensive Weapons Act and Explosives Devices Act.

Abeysekara, the former senior superintendent of police who headed the CID, was accused of fabricating evidence in the case against former DIG Vaas Gunawardena, his son and four other police officers related to the murder of late businessman Mohamed Shyam in 2013.

The Court of Appeal discharged Abeysekara from the case in August this year, prompting the Attorney General to withdraw the charges filed against him. (NewsWire)
