An appeal has been lodged in the Colombo Civil Appellate High Court challenging the order of the Colombo District Court, which rejected a request to compel Sri Lanka cricketer Chamika Karunaratne to provide a blood sample for a DNA test in a paternity case.

The District Court dismissed the application, ruling that sufficient grounds had not been presented to justify a DNA test. 

The case was filed by airline pilot Rasika Sewwandi, who claims Karunaratne fathered her child and has sought a declaration to that effect. 

In her petition, Sewwandi requested that the court declare Karunaratne as the father and direct the Registrar General to issue a birth certificate naming him accordingly. 

She alleges that she and Karunaratne were in a relationship from around 2023 and that he later refused to acknowledge paternity after she became pregnant.

Karunaratne has consistently denied the claim and opposed undergoing a DNA test. (Newswire)

The Colombo District Court has rejected a request seeking an order to compel Sri Lanka cricketer Chamika Karunaratne to provide a blood sample for a DNA test in a paternity case.

The application was made in connection with a lawsuit filed by airline pilot Rasika Sewwandi, who claims that her child was fathered by Karunaratne and has sought a declaration to that effect.

Delivering its order, the court held that sufficient grounds had not been presented to justify granting the request for a DNA test and dismissed the application.

However, the court ordered that the main case be called again on October 9 for further proceedings.

In her petition, the plaintiff has requested the court to declare that Karunaratne is the father of her child and to direct the Registrar General to issue a birth certificate naming him as the child’s father.

She also alleges that she and Karunaratne were in a relationship from around 2023, during which they had an intimate relationship, and claims that he later refused to acknowledge paternity after she became pregnant.

Karunaratne has previously denied the paternity claim and opposed undergoing a DNA test.

The Flight Attendants’ Union of Sri Lanka has refuted media reports claiming that a woman involved in a child custody case with a prominent Sri Lankan cricketer was an air hostess.

Issuing a statement, the Union said the woman in question was not an air hostess employed by any airline.

The Union further called the wrongful identification misleading and baseless, pointing out that it unfairly discredits its members and tarnishes the reputation of the profession. (Newswire)

A woman has lodged a legal case alleging that Sri Lankan cricketer Chamika Karunaratne is the father of her child and has refused to accept responsibility.

Speaking to the media after attending today’s court case, she said Karunaratne had failed to appear in court, citing illness.

“Chamika Karunaratne is this child’s father. As he has refused to accept responsibility, I have been forced to come to court seeking a paternity test. I am not sure if he will even appear at future court hearings. He wasted my time at the Women and Children Bureau while I was pregnant, and now the child is two months old. This child needs to live in Sri Lanka. I know he is the father. All I want is for him to fulfil his duties,” the woman said. (Newswire)

A news item published on July 16, 2023, on Hiru TV citing that a Sri Lanka ‘A’ team player taking part in the ‘ACC Men’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup’ has broken the team protocols to attend a party is totally false, fabricated, and malicious.

We wish to state that the said player attended the birthday party of one of his friends on the 15th of July evening as a matter of courtesy, following an invitation made to him.

Prior to attending the Birthday Party, the said player informed the team manager of the invitation and obtained approval to attend the function.

Following attending the party, the player duly arrived at the hotel before the curfew time, which was the time specified by the team management for the players and team officials to be back in their hotel room.

Hence, SLC strongly urges Hiru TV to take appropriate steps to rectify this false report, which has been published without any knowledge of the team curfew times set by the management and without independently verifying the facts with SLC.
