Former Deputy Secretary General of Parliament Chaminda Kularatne appeared before the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption today (13).

His appearance was linked to investigations initiated following a complaint lodged by Kularatne and others regarding the alleged misuse of vehicles and official residences said to have been committed by the Speaker.

Kularatne arrived at the Bribery Commission to provide a statement in connection with the matter, as inquiries continue into the allegations. (Newswire)

The Court of Appeal has ordered that the writ petition filed by Deputy Secretary General of Parliament Chaminda Kularatne challenging the suspension of his service be taken up on July 20 for confirmation of facts.

The petition, which seeks an order declaring the Speaker’s decision to suspend him unlawful and void, was called today before the bench comprising Court President Rohantha Abeysuriya and Justice Priyantha Fernando.

Appearing for the petitioner, President’s Counsel Sanjeewa Jayawardena informed the court that he was prepared to confirm facts. 

Counsel for the respondents, including President’s Counsel K. Kanagishwaran for the Speaker, Nigel Hatch for Ministers Bimal Ratnayake and Anil Jayantha Fernando, and Attorney‑at‑Law Chamara Nanayakkarawasam for another respondent, indicated they would raise preliminary objections regarding the maintainability of the petition.

After considering submissions, the Court directed that the matter be called again on July 20.

Kularatne’s petition argues that the Speaker’s decision to suspend his duties without a fair inquiry is contrary to law and seeks a writ order to annul the decision. (Newswire)
