Opposition Leader and Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Leader Sajith Premadasa has vowed not to abandon Badulla District MP Chaminda Wijesiri, stressing that justice will be sought through the appeal process.

Premadasa told reporters that while the judiciary must be respected, he believes Wijesiri will ultimately receive justice.

“Chaminda Wijesiri is not only a pillar of strength for the Badulla District and the SJB, but also for the people of Sri Lanka. He has fearlessly raised serious issues on behalf of citizens through his political and parliamentary work. We will stand by him, and we trust the judicial system to deliver justice,” he said.

The comments came after the Badulla High Court sentenced Wijesiri to one‑and‑a‑half years in prison earlier today. The court found him guilty of wrongful restraint, assault causing bodily harm, and criminal intimidation of police officers.

The case stemmed from a 2019 incident near the Bandarawela roundabout, when a police jeep overtook the MP’s vehicle. Prosecutors said the confrontation escalated into an altercation, during which police officers were assaulted and intimidated.

Following trial proceedings, the High Court delivered its verdict, convicting Wijesiri and imposing the custodial sentence. (Newswire)

Deputy Minister Chathuranga Abeysinghe has rejected claims by Opposition MP Chaminda Wijesiri that the newly opened government sugar outlet selling brown sugar has failed, saying sales have exceeded expectations within days of its launch.

Wijesiri, a Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP, said the sugar outlet had been unsuccessful, accusing the government of poor planning and execution.

Responding to the criticism, Abeysinghe said the outlet had been in operation for only nine days and had already recorded sales exceeding Rs. 800,000. He said the figures clearly demonstrated strong public demand and contradicted Opposition allegations of failure.

“The shop has been open for just nine days, and sales have already crossed eight lakhs. This shows the concept is working,” the Deputy Minister said, adding that the initiative was aimed at making brown sugar more accessible and affordably priced to consumers.

The government has positioned the outlet as part of a broader effort to stabilise sugar prices and encourage healthier consumption through the promotion of brown sugar. (Newswire)

MP Chaminda Wijesiri says the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) cannot move forward without making necessary changes to the top posts of the party.

Addressing the media, he said those who have previously failed in making the party successful must step down and provide an opportunity for other capable members.

He further said that the party must be reformed, with several members in key positions required to be changed.

“If Sajith Premadasa wants to win, he must work to bring forward the young and capable members to the forefront. By this, he can convey to the voters and party supporters that a successful future government has been created,” he said.

MP Chaminda Wijesiri alleged that the SJB Leader is unable to do so, due to the actions of certain senior and old members, who are working to protect their own positions within the party. (Newswire)

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Parliamentarian Chaminda Wijesiri has announced his decision to resign as a Member of Parliament.

Addressing the Parliament today (Jan 09), the Badulla District MP said he has submitted his letter of resignation to the Speaker of the House MP Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.

MP Chaminda Wijesiri further said that the Parliament needs a new mandate, adding that the public was cursing all 225 MPs, including their children, and that his children do not deserve such ill will.

He pointed out that the children of the Parliamentarians do not deserve to be blamed for the downfall of the country, which may or may not be due to the actions of the Parliamentarians.

Praising the SJB Leader MP Sajith Premadasa for his leadership of the party, MP Chaminda Wijesiri said he will not leave the party but will consider re-entering politics under the SJB once MP Premadasa is elected to power. (NewsWire)
