Parliament today passed the Chief of Defence Staff (Repeal) Bill without amendments, formally abolishing the post of Chief of Defence Staff and repealing the law that established it.

The second reading debate on the Bill was held from 11.00 am to 5.00 pm, after which it was approved without a vote. 

The Bill had first been presented to Parliament on 04 August 2025 for its initial reading.

The legislation repeals the Chief of Defence Staff Act No. 35 of 2009, which created the post of Chief of Defence Staff to coordinate activities between the Armed Forces and the Ministry of Defence in line with contemporary requirements at the time.

With the repeal, the post of Chief of Defence Staff will cease to exist. In addition, all movable and immovable property belonging to the Office of the Chief of Defence Staff will be transferred to the Ministry to which defence subjects are assigned. (Newswire)
