The Coconut Research Institute Sri Lanka in Lunuwila says that an increase in the coconut harvest is expected in May and June this year compared to the same period last year.

The Chairman of the Institute said that last year a harvest of 477 million coconuts was received, and this year a harvest of 555 million coconuts is expected.

The Chairman further said that the price of a coconut in the areas surrounding the Coconut Triangle has stabilized at around Rs. 163. (Newswire)

Lanka Sathosa has announced measures to ensure the sale of rice and coconuts at controlled prices as announced by the Minister of Trade recently to ensure continuous supply during the festive season. 

Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe told Parliament yesterday that Rice Millers agreed to supply 200,000 kilos of rice daily, while one million coconuts will also be sold for Rs. 130 through Sathosa outlets.

Lanka Sathosa Chairman Dr. Samitha Perera announced that steps have been taken to distribute the stocks of rice and coconuts to Sathosa outlets today. 

He further said that however, one customer will only be allowed to purchase 03 coconuts and 05 kilos of rice at once. 

Dr. Samitha Perera said the public can obtain the rice and coconuts from Sathosa outlets in Colombo from this evening, and in the suburbs from tomorrow (Dec 06). (Newswire)

Minister of Trade Wasantha Samarasinghe has outlined measures taken to ensure the continuous supply of essential foods during the upcoming festive season.

Addressing the Parliament today, Minister Samarasinghe said that Rice Millers have agreed to supply 200,000 kilos of rice daily with effect from today (04 Dec). 

He said the rice will be supplied to the local market via state-owned retail chain, Lanka Sathosa at a controlled price.

The Minister of Trade further announced that one million coconuts will also be sold through Sathosa outlets in the suburbs.

Minister Samarasinghe said that the coconuts will be sold at a price of Rs. 130 over the next two weeks. (Newswire)
