The bodies of three individuals have been recovered from the earth mound that collapsed in Mawanella today (29).

A group of workers building a wall in the Manikkawa area was trapped after the earth mound collapsed on them this morning.

Rescue operations were immediately launched, after which the bodies of all three workers were found. (Newswire)

The bridge across the Hulanda Oya on the Embilipitiya-Middeniya road, originating from the Kumbugodaara area collapsed along with a lorry this morning.

According to media reports, the bridge had collapsed between 6:30 and 7:30 am while a lorry loaded with timber had attempted to cross. 

Following the incident, traffic came to a standstill and the water supply was disrupted in some areas. 

According to area residents, the bridge, constructed in 1985 during the tenure of late President Ranasinghe Premadasa, had collapsed due to the widening of the road on both sides without proper maintenance. (NewsWire)

A student was reported dead due to sustaining injuries after the wall of a school collapsed in the Weragoda area in Wellampitiya today.

Six other students who had sustained injuries in the incident have been admitted to hospital, while one is reported to be in critical condition.

Five of the injured students are receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital and one child has been transferred to the Children’s Hospital.

A 09-year-old boy has been injured after a wall collapsed in a primary school in the Wijerama area in Nawinna today.

The child is suspected to have sustained injuries to his spine and is undergoing treatment at the Colombo South Teaching Hospital in Kalubowila. 

The principal of the school said that the wall belonged to the house of a Sri Lankan artist and had collapsed onto the roof of the washroom at the school this afternoon.

He further said that several warnings had been issued to the singer to take necessary measures pertaining to the wall but he had failed to do so.

The principal also revealed that the singer was also informed through the area Grama Niladhari Officer in this regard, but had disregarded the many warnings. (NewsWire)

A Sri Lankan national is reported to have died in the building collapse that occurred in Qatar’s capital, Doha on Wednesday (22).

According to Qatar’s interior ministry, the building is a four-story structure in Doha’s Bin Durham neighbourhood. 

It said rescuers found nine survivors, while the one person killed was inside the building at the time of the collapse.

The deceased Sri Lankan has been identified as a 56-year-old man and was identified by his son.

Another 60-year-old individual is reported missing and the Sri Lankan Embassy in Qatar has been informed in this regard by his son working in Qatar.

The Sri Lankan Embassy and Foreign Employment Office in Qatar are conducting further inquiries into the incident. (NewsWire)
