According to media reports, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasooriya has lodged a complaint with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the National Police Commission against a Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (SDIG).

Reports said the IGP has requested disciplinary action and a transfer for the senior officer, who is alleged to have leaked confidential internal documents and false information about top police officials to social media.

An audio clip said to involve the SDIG and a social media activist from Kurunegala has reportedly been submitted to the Police Commission as evidence. The CID has recorded statements from both the activist and the IGP, while the senior officer in question is expected to be summoned for questioning. (Newswire)

The Sri Lanka Police has arrested a total of 08 candidates in the last 24 hours ending at 06.00 am today, ahead of the upcoming Local Government Elections. 

According to the Police, five supporters have also been arrested during this period. 

The Police have also received four (04) complaints related to election violence and 15 concerning election law violations. 

The Sri Lanka Police has received a total of 568 election-related complaints from 03 March to 05 May 2025.

Among the complaints, 116 are related to election violence, and 452 are concerning election law violations. 

A total of 54 candidates and 204 supporters have been arrested, while 46 vehicles have been taken into Police custody during this period.

The Sri Lanka Police have received a total of 429 election-related complaints from 03 March to 24 April, ahead of the 2025 Local Government Elections. 

According to the Police, among the complaints, 61 are related to election violence and 222 are concerning election law violations.

During this period, 25 candidates and 98 supporters have been arrested, while 23 vehicles have been taken into Police custody.

Meanwhile, during the 24 hours ending at 06.00 am today, the Police have received a total of 31 election-related complaints. 

Among the complaints, 03 are related to election violence and 20 are concerning election law violations. 

The Police have arrested 02 candidates and 06 supporters during this period. 

The 2025 Local Government Election is scheduled for 06 May 2025, with postal voting having commenced today. (Newswire)
