The Government has decided to provide electronic equipment required by Members of Parliament under a plan for usage and ownership of the equipment during their tenure.

According to a circular issued by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, a decision has been taken to provide computers, photocopy machines, fax machines, and mobile phones for the tenure of Parliamentarians of the current Parliament. 

Per the circular, the depreciation value of the goods will be charged on an instalment basis after purchase.

Ownership of the goods will be transferred to the Parliamentarian after the payments are collected.

As such, the Ministry has proposed allocating Rs. 800,000 during an MP’s tenure for this purpose.

Previously, Rs. 01 million could be obtained under two instalments of Rs. 500,000 from MPs during their tenure in Parliament. (Newswire)

The Parliamentary Sectoral Oversight Committee on Media, Youth, Heritage and New Citizen has taken up for discussion issues related to the culture and modern youth of the country in terms of the internet and social network activities.

According to a Parliament statement, the discussion was held when the Parliamentary Committee met under the chairmanship of MP Lalith Varna Kumara in Parliament recently.

Addressing the meeting, the executive member of the Sri Lanka Arts Council Dharmananda Wijesinghe pointed out that due to the internet and related social network activities, social changes are taking place in the country and that such changes are mostly negative and are harmful, rather than positive.

Furthermore, he pointed out that the changes taking place would damage the core values of the country and that this situation would severely affect the youth groups.

The committee discussed instances of someone presenting a rival political idea against the ideas of his party, being surrounded and attacked and political groups and political power projects operating in the form of mafia in social networks, which they deemed creates a very dangerous situation.

It was also discussed at length that computer games that harm children’s minds such as shooting, influence thoughts such as revenge and harming others, which has also become a serious condition.

Also participating in the discussion, youth representatives pointed out the need for the implementation of leadership training programs for all young people, stating that it should be considered an important step.

Members of Parliament, S.M.M. Musharraf, Sanjeeva Edirimanna, Jagath Samarawickrama, Sarath Weerasekera, D. Weerasinghe and Isuru Dodangoda participated in the meeting. (NewsWire)
