The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has seized cosmetics worth nearly Rs. 10 million, found without mandatory labeling, during a raid in Pettah, Colombo.

Acting on information provided by the Police Special Unit, CAA officials carried out the raid yesterday (09) at a warehouse on Pettah’s main street. 

The confiscated consignment included imported skin‑whitening creams and lotions.

Authorities confirmed that the seized products lacked legally required details such as the date of manufacture, expiry date, manufacturer’s name, and importer’s information, a serious violation of consumer protection laws.

Officials emphasized that the goods were taken into custody before they could reach the retail market.

The CAA has already collected samples from 13 different brands, which have been sent for laboratory testing and further legal proceedings. (Newswire)

Colombo Port Police have arrested a clerk suspected of stealing cosmetic products worth Rs. 574,425 from a consignment imported from India.

According to Police investigations, a private company had imported two pallets of cosmetics from India on Nov. 7, 2025, the Lankadeepa newspaper reported. 

The shipment was stored at the Bandaranaike warehouse of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority after paying port and customs duties, pending release.

On Nov. 26, a clerk from another company allegedly entered the warehouse and opened four cardboard boxes from the consignment. He is accused of stealing the packaged cosmetic items stored inside.

The Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court has ordered the destruction of a stock of imported cosmetics valued at approximately Rs. 10 million, seized from two businesses in Rajagiriya.

The products, said to be imported from the UK and Australia, were seized during a raid by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) on June 6.

Seren Sense International (Pvt) Ltd was fined Rs. 125,000 after pleading guilty to five charges.

These included mislabeling imported products as local, selling expired items, and failing to provide proper supplier information or invoices.

S & D Destiny (Pvt) Ltd, operating near Ambagaha Junction, was fined Rs. 100,000 after admitting guilt to four similar charges.

The court also ordered the destruction of the seized products, which included perfumes, body lotions, conditioners, and vitamins. (Newswire)

The Sri Lanka Navy seized a stock of smuggled cosmetic products during a search operation in the Kiranchi sea area, north of Mannar, on April 16.

The operation was carried out by the Rapid Action Boat Squadron (RABS) of SLNS Buwaneka, under the North Central Naval Command. Navy personnel recovered two suspicious floating parcels, which were found to contain 3,200 sachet shampoo packets, 376 cosmetic creams, 75 soap bars, and several other items.

Authorities suspect the items were abandoned by smugglers in response to increased naval patrols in the region. The seized goods have been handed over to the Jayapuram Police for further legal action. (Newswire)

A 34-year-old man has been arrested at the Katunayake Airport with over Rs. 05 million worth of cosmetics, it was reported.

The suspect is reported to have attempted to smuggle in the cosmetics, which were found packed in his suitcase. 

The man, a resident of Batticaloa, was arrested by Customs officials while at the arrival lounge.

Customs investigations have revealed that the suspect, a businessman, was a frequent traveller and that he had arrived from Mumbai, India.
