The Balapitiya Magistrate’s Court today ordered the further remand of Ambalangoda Pradeshiya Sabha member Amitha Chathuranga Samaranayake, representing the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), until July 24 following his arrest with a repeater‑type firearm.

The order was issued by Magistrate Pavithra Sanjeewani after Samaranayake was produced before court earlier in the day.

Police said the councillor was taken into custody on July 11 during a raid conducted by the Galle District Crime Division, where officers recovered the firearm in his possession.

Samaranayake remains in custody as investigations continue into the case involving illegal possession of weapons. (Newswire)

A Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) councillor was suddenly taken ill and hospitalised during the budget debate of the Soronathota Pradeshiya Sabha today. 

At the first budget vote held on November 7, the National People’s Power (NPP) was defeated by three votes.

Accordingly, during today’s second budget vote debate, the SJB councillor experienced a sudden medical emergency and was admitted to the hospital. (Newswire)

The husband of a National Peoples’ Power (NPP) Urban Councillor, arrested in possession of heroin, has been remanded until November 12 for further questioning, as per an order issued by the Thambuttegama Magistrate’s Court.

The suspect, a school principal, was produced before the court this afternoon (06) by the Anuradhapura Police.

The court has authorized the Anuradhapura Division Criminal Investigation Unit to detain and interrogate the suspect further.

The Police also revealed that the suspect’s wife, Councillor Disna Neranjala, is a relative of Kosgoda Suji, a known large-scale drug trafficker and criminal.

A special investigation has been launched into the assets of the arrested school principal, the Police informed the court. 

Authorities seized 1.185 kilos of heroin, with an estimated street value of approximately Rs. 20 million, from the suspect’s possession. (Newswire)
