A 24‑year‑old resident of Kolonnawa was arrested last evening (14) after police found him in possession of three counterfeit Rs. 5,000 notes.

The arrest was made by a team of Wellampitiya Police officers during a raid in the Kolonnawa area, following information received by the station.

Investigations revealed that the suspect had attempted to pay for food at a local restaurant using a fake Rs. 5,000 note.

The restaurant owner, suspicious of the currency, alerted police, leading to the arrest.

Wellampitiya Police confirmed that further inquiries into the case are underway. (Newswire)

A 53-year-old Sri Lankan woman has been arrested by the Central Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) after police seized 60 bundles of counterfeit US$100 notes with a face value of US$700,000 during a raid in Kotikawatta.

The arrest was made at the suspect’s residence earlier today following an investigation into an alleged counterfeit currency operation.

Police said the fake currency haul has an estimated face value of around Rs. 210 million.

Investigators suspect the counterfeit notes were printed overseas and smuggled into Sri Lanka. Police further revealed that a Pakistani national is believed to be linked to the operation and is currently under investigation.

According to police, the suspects had allegedly used the counterfeit US dollar notes to deceive local businessmen and were preparing to exchange the fake currency at a rate of Rs. 284 per US dollar.

The suspect is scheduled to be produced before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court No. 8 tomorrow.

Investigations are continuing to identify other individuals connected to the alleged counterfeit currency racket. (Newswire)

Global sportswear brand PUMA SE has secured four enjoining orders from the Commercial High Court of Colombo against four entities allegedly involved in the sale of counterfeit goods bearing the company’s registered trademarks, the Daily FT reported.

The civil litigation was initiated by PUMA SE, represented by Sudath Perera Associates, against four entities under Sri Lanka’s Intellectual Property Act No. 36 of 2003.

According to the company, the defendants were unlawfully selling footwear products that featured the “PUMA” name, the leaping cat logo, and other distinctive elements deceptively similar to the brand’s globally recognized trademarks. PUMA argued that the retailers, known in the local footwear industry, were aware or should have been aware that the goods were counterfeit.

PUMA further claimed that the unauthorised use of its marks was aimed at misleading consumers and capitalizing on the brand’s reputation. The circulation of counterfeit goods—described as being of inferior quality—was said to be causing significant damage to the company’s goodwill and public trust.

After reviewing the pleadings, Judges Amali Ranaweera and Chamath Madanayake issued enjoining orders prohibiting the defendants and any parties acting on their behalf from producing, importing, marketing, selling, or otherwise distributing any goods bearing marks identical or confusingly similar to PUMA’s trademarks. The Sri Lanka Police have warned the public of the circulation of fake currency notes, following the arrest of four suspects with fake Rs. 5000 currency notes in various parts of the country.

According to the Police, one suspect was arrested with three counterfeit Rs. 5000 currency notes in the Habarana area yesterday.

Based on information from the suspect, the Police were able to arrest two more suspects in the Habarana and Anuradhapura areas with two counterfeit Rs. 5000 currency notes each. 

Further interrogations had led to the arrest of another suspect in the Pihimbiyagollewa area today with 138 counterfeit Rs. 5000 currency notes, a laptop, a scanner, and a printing machine. 

The arrested suspects are aged between 23 and 42 years, and are residents of Habarana and Anuradhapura. 

The Habarana Police is conducting further investigations. 

The public has been urged to be cautious of the currency notes used during transactions for the purchase of daily necessities. (Newswire)
